A user interface element for selecting items from a hierarchy of items can present a cell for each level in the hierarchy of items. Each cell can be associated with a level in the hierarchy and is operable to receive user input. In response to receiving user input directed to a cell, a collection of items can be presented where each presented item is from the level in the hierarchy associated with the cell. Each presented item can also be a child of a selected item in a cell associated with a higher level in the hierarchy.

A plurality of memory lies within the airflow created by the cooling fans and includes modules arranged in a plurality of pairs of memory modules aligned in substantially the same direction as airflow. Each pair has a first memory module and a second memory module, the first and second memory modules each have a length, and the first memory module and the second module are disposed such that the length of the first memory module is in a substantially parallel relationship with respect to the length of the second memory module. A portion of the length of the first memory module is disposed between another pair of memory modules.

A touch sensing device is disclosed. The touch sensing device includes one or more multifunctional nodes each of which represents a single touch pixel. Each multifunctional node includes a touch sensor with one or more integrated I/O mechanisms. The touch sensor and integrated I/O mechanisms share the same communication lines and I/O pins of a controller during operation of the touch sensing device.

A docking station is disclosed. The docking station includes a display and a housing configured to hold the display in a manner that exposes a viewing surface of the display to view. The housing defines a docking area configured to receive a portable computer; The docking area is at least partly obscured by the display when viewed from the viewing surface side of the display at an angle substantially orthogonal to the viewing surface.

Improved techniques for communicating between a portable electronic device and an accessory (or auxiliary) device are disclosed. The accessory device can augment or supplement the functionality or capabilities of the portable electronic device. For example, in one embodiment, the accessory device can provide wireless communication capabilities to the portable electronic device. In one embodiment, the portable electronic device pertains to a portable media player and thus provide media data for storage, playback or transmission. In one embodiment, the accessory device is attachable to the portable electronic device.
Abstract:
Methods and systems for managing media distribution are disclosed. Advantageously, the management of media distribution can be substantially computer implemented and include management of media distribution agreements. The management of media distribution agreements can operate to manage the creation and/or renewal of media distribution agreements in an automated and efficient manner. The methods and systems for management of media distribution can also take appropriate action when an established media distribution agreement expires.
Abstract:
Techniques to generate partial display updates in a buffered window system in which arbitrary visual effects are permitted to any one or more windows (e.g., application-specific window buffers) are described. Once a display output region is identified for updating, the buffered window system is interrogated to determine which regions within each window, if any, may effect the identified output region. Such determination considers the consequences any filters associated with a window impose on the region needed to make the output update.
Abstract:
An interface connector is disclosed. The connector enables a compact communication link between a media player and a CPU configured so that the interface enables the media player to operate as a USB memory drive for the CPU. In one embodiment, the invention comprises an interface that is removably engagable from a media player and another electronic device. The interface includes a rigid housing with a first and second end connectors that are configured to facilitate data and power transmission between a media player and an electronic device when connected to the interface. The interface connector can be configured to be very compact and easily transportable.
Abstract:
Computing the popularity of a source of serial online content based upon a number of subscriptions to the source of serial online content is disclosed. In some embodiments, upon receiving an indication that a subscription to a source of serial online content has been requested, a popularity score for the source of serial online content is computed based at least in part on a decayed count of subscriptions to the source of serial online content over a prescribed time period. In some embodiments, the computation of the popularity score includes time decaying the count of subscriptions by multiplying by a decay factor at prescribed time intervals. In some embodiments, the popularity scores of a plurality of sources of serial online content are sorted and ranked, to generate, for example, a listing of the most popular sources of serial online content.

A consumer electronic product (e.g., a portable media player ported to a media delivery accessory) is powered by a limited capacity DC power source (such as a battery or mini-fuel cell). The consumer electronic product limits the maximum allowable sound pressure level (SPL) that can be produced by the speakers. In one embodiment, the maximum allowable SPL is based upon an amount of stored energy available in the limited capacity DC power source.
