Abstract: A utility blade includes a first blade retention feature positioned on a proximal edge of a tang of the utility blade. The proximal edge is angularly offset from a longitudinal axis of the utility blade. The first blade retention feature is associated with an engagement axis parallel to the longitudinal axis of the utility blade. The utility blade is configured to translate along the engagement axis to cause the first blade retention feature to engage with a first blade engagement component of a blade holder. The utility blade further includes a second blade retention feature positioned on a second edge of the tang of the utility blade. The second blade retention feature is positioned along the longitudinal axis of the utility blade and between the first blade retention feature and a distal tip of a cutting portion of the utility blade.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for sharpening a cutting edge of a cutting tool, such as a kitchen knife. In some embodiments, an abrasive assembly has a frame, a handle, and a cartridge that supports a plurality of abrasive members each having an associated abrasive surface. A rod affixes the abrasive assembly to a base assembly to facilitate movement of the abrasive assembly along the cutting edge of the tool responsive to engagement, by a user, of the user handle. Each abrasive member is configured to be moved, by the user, with respect to the handle to present each abrasive surface in turn. In some cases, the cartridge is rotatable about a cartridge axis that may be parallel or non-parallel to a central axis of the rod.

Abstract: A tool sharpener has first and second guide surfaces to respectively support a cutting tool adjacent first and second abrasive surfaces. A drive assembly moves the first and second abrasive surfaces with respect to the first and second guide surfaces. A control circuit directs a user to place the cutting tool against the first abrasive surface using the first guide surface to sharpen a cutting edge of the tool during a first sharpening operation. The control circuit activates an indicator mechanism at a conclusion of the first sharpening operation to direct the user to perform a second sharpening operation in which the user presents the cutting tool against the second abrasive surface using the second guide surface to sharpen the cutting edge.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for sharpening a cutting edge of a cutting tool, such as a kitchen knife. A fixture secures opposing sides of a blade of the cutting tool and includes a main body and hinged first and second clamping jaws each having a clamping end adapted to compressingly engage a respective side of the blade. A guide coupled to the main body has converging support surfaces to contactingly engage a back edge (spine) of the blade opposite the cutting edge to center the blade along a central plane of the fixture. A retraction mechanism establishes a clamping force upon each of the respective sides of the blade via the clamping jaws. Further embodiments include a base assembly adapted to receive the fixture, and a swing arm style abrasive assembly to carry out a sharpening operation upon the cutting edge.

Abstract: Apparatus for sharpening a cutting tool. In some embodiments, a tool sharpener includes an abrasive medium having an abrasive surface. A stationary tool support guide provides a guide surface that supports a side of the tool during presentation of a cutting edge of the tool against the abrasive surface. A rotatable edge guide has a roller member with a curvilinearly extending outer surface. The roller member is rotatable about an edge guide roller axis to engage, via rolling contact, the cutting edge during the presentation of the cutting edge against the abrasive surface.

Abstract: A cutting tool, such as a kitchen knife, has a handle with an outer grip surface. A blade extends from a distal end of the handle along a central axis. The blade is formed of a metal material and has opposing first and second side surfaces that converge to a cutting edge having a plurality of continuous segments separated by a series of spaced-apart channels. Each channel is formed by an interior sidewall that extends into a body portion of the blade from the first side surface to the second side surface. Each of the channels has a channel width extending in a direction along the cutting edge, and a channel depth orthogonal to the channel width. The channels are formed using a cold forging operation on the first side surface to provide localized work hardened portions of the metal material adjacent the respective channels.
