    摘要: The present invention is a quantization-level-sampling (QLS) modem which includes means for separately equalizing each loop of an end-to-end digital telephone system network connection by employing a plurality of transmitter filters and a plurality of receiver filters in such a way that, in the direction of transmission from modem to central office, the voltage samples seen by the coder/decoder stations are equivalent to the network quantization levels transmitted by the modem, and in the direction of transmission from central office to modem, the voltage samples seen by the modem are equivalent to the network quantization levels encoded by the coder/decoder stations. The invention also includes a QLS modem communications system which includes the aforesaid digital telephone system network and a plurality of QLS modems. In preferred embodiments, an adaptation service unit within the telephone system network assists in the determination of the settings of the transmitter and receiver filters.

    摘要: In accordance with an embodiment of the invention, a data converter is disclosed employing at least one minimum phase FIR filter. The data converter includes an analog-to-digital converter for converting an incoming analog signal into a plurality of digital signal samples, followed by a minimum phase FIR filter to filter the digital signal samples. Alternatively, the data converter includes a digital-to-analog converter preceded by a minimum phase FIR filter to filter a plurality of digital signal samples that are converted into an analog signal by the digital-to-analog converter. The data converter may include both analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion. In a preferred embodiment, the minimum phase FIR filter is an optimum minimum phase FIR filter. A method for precisely calculating the filter coefficients of an optimum minimum phase FIR filter is also disclosed.

    摘要: The problem of noise enhancement is eliminated in communications systems by predistorting the amplitude of the transmitted information signal in a manner which compensates for the amplitude distortion introduced in a portion of the communications channel. In the disclosed embodiments, the communications system includes two signal transceivers which communicate with one another through a communications channel. The communications channel includes two-wire subscriber loops adjacent to each signal transceiver with a four-wire transmission path disposed between the subscriber loops. Each transceiver transmits an information signal which, depending on the system noise characteristics, is predistorted to compensate for all or a portion of the amplitude distortion introduced in a subscriber loop adjacent to that signal transceiver. The predistortion necessary to provide such compensation is determined at each transceiver in response to received signals at that transceiver.
