In an automotive vehicle occupant protection system, the vehicle body comprises a chassis and a vehicle body main part mounted on said chassis in a relatively moveable manner in a fore-and-aft direction, and an arrangement for engaging a vehicle body main part to the chassis under normal condition, and releasing the vehicle body main part from the chassis upon occurrence of a vehicle crash, and a bumper member provided on the chassis and adapted to collide with a stopper member provided on the vehicle body main part after a prescribed rearward travel of the chassis relative to the vehicle body main part. Thus, upon occurrence of a crash, the chassis having a substantial mass starts decelerating, and moves rearward with respect to the remaining part of the vehicle body. This in turn causes the tension of the seat belt to increase, and the restraint on the vehicle occupant to increase. This is followed by the application of a reverse deceleration to the chassis so that the initial sharp rise in the deceleration acting on the vehicle occupant is smoothly connected to the ride down state in which the vehicle occupant decelerates at the same rate as the vehicle body.

One of the anchor points, which typically consists of a seat belt buckle, is attached to the G control vehicle body member via a force transmitting member such as a cable member which is adapted to move the anchor point in a direction to increase a tension of the seat belt at the time of a vehicle crash. A seat belt pretensioner device can be thus achieved in a simple manner without requiring any special power actuator.

A seat belt tightening system incorporated with a vehicle seat, comprising: a deceleration sensor for detecting deceleration indicative of occurence of a vehicle crash; a tensioning unit for tensioning a seat belt; a power unit for activating the tensioning unit upon receiving an output signal from the deceleration sensor; a safety catch member for preventing activation of the power unit; and mounted state detecting unit for detecting a mounted state of the vehicle seat and releasing the safety catch member only when it has detected the mounted state of the vehicle seat. Thus, the seat belt tightening system may be safely incorporated with the vehicle seat as a subassembly for improved efficiency of the assembling process, and the inadvertent activation of the system is positively prevented. In particular, when an explosive element is used as a part of the seat belt tightening system, it can be place conveniently inside the seat cushion of the vehicle seat without unduly complicating the assembly process for the seat belt tightening system.

A plurality of speaker units are mounted in a closed cabinet and the cabinet is swingably mounted along one side thereof in a casing. In a first swinging position of the cabinet, the speaker mounting surface of the cabinet is flush with the ceiling panel and the speakers radiate sound downwards into the passenger compartment of the vehicle, while in a second swinging position of the cabinet, the speaker mounting surface is perpendicular to the ceiling panel and the speakers face rearwards to radiate sound to the exterior through an open hatchback door.
