Thus, the vehicle body demonstrates a high reaction load during an early phase of a vehicle crash, and a low reaction load during a final phase of the crash so that peak acceleration of the vehicle occupant who is restrained by a seat belt involving a certain amount of resiliency can be minimized.

The vehicle occupant protection system can significantly reduce the peak deceleration of the vehicle occupant even with a small vehicle body. The system comprises a seat fitted with a seat belt which is supported on a vehicle body so as to be slidable in a direction of an input crash load, a first actuator for applying an acceleration of a same direction as the crash load upon detection of the vehicle crash to the seat, and a second actuator for applying an acceleration of an opposite direction from the crash load with a prescribed time delay following the detection of the vehicle crash to the seat. Thus, in case of a vehicle crash or other high deceleration situations, the seat is accelerated rearward upon the occurrence of a vehicle crash by the first actuator so that the restraining capability of the seat belt is enhanced by applying to the seat a deceleration higher than the vehicle body deceleration during an early phase of the vehicle crash. Thereafter, an acceleration in the opposite direction is applied to the seat by the second actuator so that the forward inertial force acting on the vehicle occupant at the time of the vehicle crash is canceled, and the equalization of the decelerations of the vehicle body, the seat and the vehicle occupant is achieved in an early stage of the crash.

In a lock device of a sliding mechanism, a pair of locking claws provided on a moving member are brought into resilient engagement with locking grooves of a locking groove group, whereby downward sliding of the moving member is permitted but upward sliding thereof is locked. The distance between the locking claws is longer than distance between the locking grooves, so that the moving member becomes locked against upward sliding at an interval smaller than the distance between the locking grooves. Thus, the moving member adapted to slide in one (downward) direction along a guide rail can be reliably locked against movement in the opposite (upward) direction at a very small interval.

The safety seat belt device also includes a lock device for locking both the shoulder belt portion and the lap belt portion when the motor vehicle undergoes a forward or rearward collision, and locking only the lap belt portion when the motor vehicle undergoes a lateral collision. The lock device may include a lock mechanism for locking the shoulder belt portion upon a forward or rearward collision, and a lock mechanism for locking the lap belt portion immediately when the seat belt is fastened by the occupant regardless of whether the motor vehicle suffers a lateral collision or not.

An occupant protecting system for a vehicle includes a triangular shock absorbing member which is accommodated in a folded state within an accommodating casing mounted along a roof rail. The shock absorbing member is held stationarily at its front and rear ends to a vehicle body by fixing pins. A movable pin mounted at a lower end of the shock absorbing member is connected through a wire to a developing or unfolding device mounted to a center pillar. The developing or unfolding device includes a gas generator and a cylinder with a piston slidably received therein and coupled to the wire. When the gas generator is operated upon collision of the vehicle to force the piston in the cylinder downwardly by a high pressure gas generated by the gas generator, the movable pin is pulled down through the wire, so that the shock absorbing member is drawn out of the accommodating casing and developed into a triangular shape. Thus, the membrane-like shock absorbing member, when being accommodated, is compact in size and can easily be mounted in a narrow space in the vehicle body.

A seat belt retractor system comprising a seat belt retractor unit having a winding spool for winding a seat belt thereon, and a seat belt tightening unit for tightening the seat belt upon detection of occurrence of a vehicle crash. The seat belt tightening unit is placed lower than the seat belt retractor unit, for instance, one on top of a floor tunnel and the other on a side wall of the floor tunnel, whereby the seat belt can be favorably passed closely across the waist and the shoulder of the vehicle occupant and a favorable occupant restraining capability of the seat belt is ensured. If the seat belt tightening unit uses an explosive propellant, it may be placed externally of the passenger compartment, for instance on the external wall surface of the floor tunnel, so as to eliminate any ill effects, such as explosive sound and combustion gas, which may be produced as a result of the combustion of the propellant.
