An adhesive composition for roofing such as shingles is disclosed which is composed of a hard asphaltic bitumen fraction having a penetration number at 77.degree. F. of from 0 to 30 dmm and a softening point of from about 150.degree. to 220.degree. F. and an elastomeric composition composed of a thermoplastic elastomer and a plasticizer wherein the overall adhesive composition has a penetration number of from 30 to 100 dmm at 130.degree. F. and a softening point of 140.degree. to 230.degree. F. The inventive composition is self-sealing and exhibits excellent squash resistance, low temperature properties and resistance to blowoff. The composition can be used with shingles as well as other types of roofing coverings.

A rectangular shingle sheet having a butt portion which is longitudinally divided into spaced apart tab segments and an undivided headlap portion which is 1.3 to 1.5 times higher than the outward extensions of said tab segments in said butt portion; said butt portion and headlap portion carrying an asphaltic backing of varying thickness Wherein the upper area of the headlap portion which is of a height approximately equal to that of the butt portion is coated with an asphaltic backing of between about 5 and about 15 mils thickness and the remaining lower area of the headlap portion and the entire butt portion is unifomly coated with an asphaltic backing of between about 20 and about 75 mils thickness. In one embodiment, the shingle is a composite roofing shingle comprising a shingle sheet having a butt portion which is longitudinally divided into tab segments spaced apart by between about 0.5 and about 1.5 their width and an undivided headlap portion which is between about 1.3 and about 1.5 times the height of the outward extension of the tab segments in the butt portion; said butt portion and headlap portion carrying an asphaltic backing of varying thickness as described above, and a separate elongated strip underlying the tab segments which fills the space between the tabs and is secured to the shingle sheet in a position underlying the thickened asphalt coated area of said sheet.The invention also includes the process for the manufacture of the shingles of this invention.

This invention concerns a light weight sheet felt material suitable for use as roof and siding underlayment and insulation board facing which comprises on a dry basis (a) 60-80 wt. % cellulose fibers; (b) 15-30 wt. % glass fibers having a diameter of 5 to 16 microns and a length of 3/8-3/4 inch; (c) 4-10 wt. % binder and (d) 0.5-10 wt. % non-asphaltic, sizing agent having a flash point above 150.degree.F. and an evaporation rate less than one which is selected from the group consisting of anionic rosinous and amphipathic ester and anhydride sizes and mixtures thereof. The felt of this invention is of considerably lighter weight and higher porosity than other felting materials used for the same purpose and can be supplied in longer continuous sheet rolls than heretofore practical from a standpoint of handling, shipping, storage, and installation. Also the present sheet felt can be produced on conventional felt making equipment in a one step process.

A novel glass fiber mat is described herein. The mat includes a plurality of substantially uniformly enmeshed individual filament fibers which comprise at least 70% by weight of the fibrous component of the mat. The mat is further characterized in that less than 20% of the area of the mat are voids which extend through the thickness of the mat, the rest being fibrous material, of said voids, at least 80%, 30% and 10%, have an equivalent diameter whose size is less than about 50 microns, 10 microns and 5 microns, respectively. This mat has an exceedingly high tensile strength both in the machine and the cross-machine directions.

What is provided herein is a glass fiber mat having a novel structure and high-strength properties which is particularly useful for roofing products, including built up roofing membranes and systems.The glass mat of the invention is comprised of two fibrous components, namely, individual filament glass fibers and extended glass fiber elements, which are formed in situ in a wet-laid process from original bundles of glass fibers. The individual filaments appear by conventional filamentation of the bundles. The extended fiber elements, however, are formed by longitudinal extension of a given bundle whose fibers are connected longitudinally. Thereby the effective length of a fiber element is very much greater than the length of the fibers therein. The fiber elements are further characterized by a non-uniform diameter, as contrasted to the fibers themselves, being thicker in the mid-section of the element where connection of fibers is maximized, and tapered towards its ends, where fiber connection is at a minimum.The extended fiber elements preferably predominate by weight of the fibrous content of the mat over the individual filaments. The desired ratio of the two components is achieved by using bundles whose fibers have a long length, and by very gentle agitation of the dispersion slurry for a short period of time.

This invention relates to a unitary roofing shingle sheet comprising (a) an undivided cop section having an unexposable upper portion and a lower portion carrying a partially exposable horizontal band of distinguishable colors or color patterns and (b) exposable tabs in a butt bottom section depending from the lower boundary of the band in the partially exposable portion of (a); the exposable portions of said shingle being covered with weather resistant granules of distinguishable hues or patterns disposed in discrete exposable areas in the band of section (a) and on each of said tabs so as to provide a distinctive color or pattern for each tab and a contrasting color or color pattern above each tab in the adjoining exposable portion of said band of section (a). In the shingle of the invention, the band of distinctive hues or patterns in the lower undivided portion of section (a) has a width approximately equal to the average height of the tabs in section (b); the tabs are spaced from each other by between about 0.5 and about 1.5 times the horizontal dimension of the tabs and the upper nonexposed portion of undivided section (a) has a width about equal to the width of said band plus y, wherein y has a value of from 1 to 5 inches.
