摘要: A braking system for an in-line skate. The skate includes a boot mounted on a chassis. A cuff is rotatably mounted on the chassis. The chassis also has a plurality of wheels rotatably mounted thereon. The braking system for the skate includes a brake pad housing which is either fixedly or pivotally attached to a rear portion of the cuff, a brake pad disposed in the housing, and a roller arm rotatably mounted on the chassis. The roller arm is spring loaded so that when the brake is not in use, the roller arm is disposed above the wheels. The roller arm has a bearing assembly disposed therein, so that when the brake is actuated by a rearward rotation of the cuff, the brake pad engages the bearing assembly of the roller arm, thereby causing said bearing assembly to engage at least one of the wheels to slow and/or stop the skate. A rear wheel of the skate may be biased to enhance the braking action and reduce wheel wear.

摘要: A Mach-Zehnder filter includes an input coupler for splitting an input signal into N equal output signals, where N>2, and a signal combining coupler for combining N optical signals into a single output signal. It further includes N optical waveguide fibers for connecting the N outputs from the input coupler to the signal combining coupler. Each of the N optical fibers subjects the light propagating therethrough to a delay that is different from the delay experienced by light propagating through each of the other optical fibers. This Mach-Zehnder filter exhibits greater finesse per stage than previous Mach-Zehnder devices, finesse being the ratio of the wavelength separation between adjacent peaks to the peak widths.

摘要: A fiber optic coupler is formed by assembling a coupler preform having two concentric glass tubes having a gap between them. The shape and/or size of the inner tube relative to the shape and/or size of the outer tube is such that a plurality of output optical fibers can be equally spaced in the gap. An input optical fiber is disposed in an aperture in the inner tube. The input and output fibers extend through the midregion of the resultant coupler preform. The midregion is heated to collapse it about the fibers, and the central portion of the midregion is stretched to reduce the diameter over a predetermined length.

摘要: A hydrolyzing flame technique is used to build up glass soots of at least two different compositions upon a rotating starting member. The process is repeated until the soots define at least one helically-oriented body of soot of one composition completely enveloped by a soot of a second composition. The soot-covered starting member is then subjected to heat to fuse it whereupon the soots are fused into compositions exhibiting different indices of refraction. The member can then be drawn into a elongate structure comprising an optical waveguide extending helically through the body of the structure.

摘要: The present invention provides devices and methods for dynamic dispersion compensation. According to one embodiment of the invention, a dispersion compensating device includes a negative dispersion fiber having an input configured to receive the optical signal, the negative dispersion fiber having a length and dispersion sufficient to remove any positive chirp from each wavelength channel of the optical signal, thereby outputting a negatively chirped optical signal; an amplifying device configured to amplify the negatively chirped optical signal; and a nonlinear positive dispersion fiber configured to receive the negatively chirped optical signal. The devices of the present invention provide broadband compensation for systems having a wide range of variable residual dispersions.

摘要: Optical fiber structures having at least two cores, whether unitary or separable, may be fabricated by controlling the placement of the cores prior to final processing to make the multi-core fiber structure. When the fiber is to be separable, at least two performs are attached, and the attachment height between adjacent canes is controlled to allow separation to be realized (or attachment to be maintained there between) anywhere along the separable multi-core fiber. These canes are then drawn together to form a desired composite fiber, either or both ends of which may be separated to allow for individual manipulation of fiber ends. The separable multi-core fiber may be utilized to fabricate a dual-port or multi-port optical component in which an input and an output (or multiple input/output) fibers are attached to the component, and the exposed distal ends of the separable multi-core fiber are thereafter separated from one another (even after the entire device is assembled and packaged) to provide separated waveguides for pigtailing or splicing to input or output fibers (or other planar or micro-optic components).

摘要: A reduced size multiplexer/demultiplexer component is achieved by tapering of waveguide ends in any of the input, output array, or phase shifting array of waveguides. Cross talk is limited in the tapered region by requiring that each waveguide in a tapered array have a distinct propagation constant.
