Abstract: An air bearing shaft for an air cycle machine is provided. The air bearing shaft includes a seal disk and a shaft body. The shaft body includes a first shaft body portion extending from a face of the seal disk to a knife-edge seal. The first shaft body portion includes journal bearing cooling holes positioned axially closer to the knife-edge seal than to the face of the seal disk. The journal bearing cooling holes extend through the first shaft body portion to a hollow interior and have a total cooling area. Start-up holes are positioned axially closer to the face of the seal disk than to the knife-edge seal. The start-up holes extend through the first shaft body portion to the hollow interior. The start-up holes have a total start-up area. A ratio of the total cooling area to the total start-up area is between 2.17 and 4.06.

Abstract: A two-wheel air cycle machine includes a tie rod defining an axis, a turbine mounted on the tie rod, and a compressor mounted on the tie rod and having a rotor portion and a disk portion with at least one aperture. The air cycle machine further includes a compressor inlet fluidly connecting the compressor and an inlet air source, at least one thrust bearing disposed between the turbine and the compressor, and a compressor end shaft coaxial with the tie rod and abutting the compressor disk portion. The compressor end shaft includes a radially-extending seal disk portion and an axially-extending shaft portion having at least one shaft aperture. The at least one disk aperture and the at least one shaft aperture are fluidly connected by a compressor disk cavity defined by a gap between the tie rod and the compressor disk portion. The at least one disk aperture, the compressor disk cavity, and the at least one shaft aperture at least partially define a compressor inlet flow path.

Abstract: An air cycle machine includes a housing, a scavenging turbine, and an ambient air fan. The housing has an exterior wall defining an overboard air inlet, an ambient air inlet, and an ambient air outlet. The scavenging turbine is arranged within the housing, is supported for rotation about a rotation axis, and is in fluid communication with the overboard air inlet. The ambient air fan is arranged within the housing, is supported for rotation about the rotation axis within the housing, and has a radially inner spoked portion and radially outer bladed portion. The bladed portion of the ambient air fan fluidly couples the ambient air inlet to the ambient air outlet and the spoked portion of the ambient air fan fluidly couples the scavenging turbine to the ambient air fan within the housing. Environmental control systems and fluid communication methods are also described.
