In an image processing device for recording images with Y, M, and C color ink, a received Bk image is recorded with a color more similar to an original black color and solves a problem caused by too much amount of ejected ink such as bleeding with other colors or feathering. An image data consisting of four color elements of YMCBk is entered from a host computer, a Bk conversion unit converts the Bk element to respective Y, M, and C elements by masking of respective Y, M, and C elements generated randomly for the entered Bk element image data, and an image synthesizing unit synthesizes the converted YMC elements with the entered YMC elements. Then, an image recording unit for forming an image with three colors of YMC forms an image based on the synthesized YMC elements and records the image on a recording medium with ejecting YMC ink from a recording head.

Using the placed masks, record data is thinned-out and supplied to a recording head. An image is then recorded. With this construction, a density fluctuation in character, image or the like can be eliminated, and moreover, a quantity of consumption of ink usable for preliminary ejection can be reduced compared with a conventional ink jet apparatus. In addition, an ink preliminary ejecting method to be practiced by the ink jet apparatus is also provided.

When the printer detects in accordance with the type of an ink tank that an ink tank is changed to another ink tank containing ink with a different density, recovery conditions for the printhead are changed in accordance with the type of the ink. Especially when an ink tank is exchanged for another ink tank containing ink with a lower density, the printer increases the number of times of suction for the printhead after the ink tank exchange and the number of times of preliminary discharge after wiping. The printer also shortens preliminary discharge intervals and increases the number of preliminary discharge times at the time of printing.
