    摘要: A plurality of methods for achieving the soft or softer handoff process such that the performance of a system is improved. A first method is based on delaying the softer handoff process. A second method is based on reducing the power of transmissions from the sector having the weakest signal strength. A third method is based on eliminating transmissions from the sector having the weakest signal strength. A fourth method adds a new base station or sector only when the mobile unit is in need of additional power to operate properly. In all four methods, reverse link demodulation in each sector may continue with or without the transmission of the forward link. In all four methods the operation could be based on the signal strength of the reverse link signal or the forward link. It is also possible to combine two or more of these methods to create a hybrid method.

    摘要: A spread spectrum receiver subsystem for utilization in a CDMA cellular telephone having a searcher receiver for scanning the time domain so as to use the PN processing gain and time discrimination properties of spread spectrum coding to determine the location in the time domain and the received signal strength of multiple receptions of a pilot signal traveling upon one or more physical propagation paths to reception. The searcher receiver provides a control signal indicative of the received pilot signals of greatest strength and corresponding time relationship. A data receiver receives spread spectrum communication signals accompanying each received pilot signal and is responsive to the searcher control signal for acquiring and demodulating a spread spectrum communication signal, concomitant with the pilot signal of greatest signal strength, and thus providing a corresponding information bearing encoded output signal.

    摘要: A novel and improved method and system for paging a cellular telephone or other wireless terminal using two paging channels that reduces standby mode power consumption described. In one embodiment of the invention, a minimally encoded quick paging channel is established over which short, quick page messages are transmitted during one of a set of quick paging slots. The quick page message indicates that a communications request has been received, and that the receiving communication terminals should process a highly encoded full paging channel over which more detailed, full page messages are transmitted during the next full paging slot. A terminal monitors full paging channel only after a quick page message has been received on the quick paging channel.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for determining the location of a mobile unit within a cellular system. A synchronized signal at a common phase is generated at each base station in a system. The mobile unit transmits a signal tone. Each base station compares the phase of the signal tone to the common phase of the synchronized signal to produce a phase offset. A system controller compares the difference between the phase offset of a first base station and the phase offset of a second base station and determines the difference in distance between the first base station and the mobile unit and the second base station and said mobile unit defining a hyperbolic or linear curve of locations. The system controller compares the difference between the phase offset of the first base station and the phase offset of a third base station and determines the difference in distance between the first base station and the mobile unit and the third base station and said mobile unit defining a second hyperbolic curve of locations. The system controller determines the intersection of the first and the second hyperbolic curves thus determining the location of the mobile unit.

    摘要: A method for determining the location of a mobile unit within a cellular system. A synchronized signal at a common phase is generated at each base station in a system.
