A reflective liquid crystal display apparatus with pixels includes a first electrode substrate, a second electrode substrate and a liquid crystal layer. The first electrode substrate includes a polymer layer having plural protrusions or depressions arranged randomly formed on a glass substrate, and a reflective layer, color filters, transparent electrodes, and an alignment layer formed and laminated sequentially on the polymer layer. The second electrode substrate, includes transparent electrodes and an alignment layer formed and laminated on a glass substrate, and arranged so that the alignment layer faces the alignment layer on the first electrode substrate. The liquid crystal layer is formed by filling a liquid crystal composition into an interval between the first and second electrode substrates. Portions of the reflective layer corresponding to the portions of each pixel other than apertures of each pixel are colored black.

An optical waveguide capable of having various characteristics and a method of manufacture thereof as well as a method of manufacturing a crystal film are provided. An optical functional material KTaxNb1-xO3 is used as an optical waveguide. The input optical signal is transmitted to the KTaxNb1-xO3 film. The KTaxNb1-xO3 film undergoes changes in optical property when an external voltage signal is applied to the electrode. Therefore, as it passes through the KTaxNb1-xO3 film, the input optical signal is modulated by the characteristic change. The modulated optical signal is taken out as an output optical signal.

Focusing on the application of a predetermined relationship between the length of a fatigue damage detection sensor having a width of a specified shape and a required sensitivity or sensing accuracy (crack propagation rate), the present invention provides a fatigue damage detection sensor for structural materials and mounting method thereof, wherein when the length between a pair of fixing portions for fixing to a surface of a structural material M, both ends of a sensor body (2) sandwiching a notched portion (5) is defined as 2H, the length of a crack C that can propagate from a tip (5A) of the notched portion (5) is defined as (a), the number of times that a working load acts on the material is defined as N, and the crack propagation rate is defined as da/dN, the length 2H between said fixing portions is set so as to obtain a required sensitivity with which da/dN is proportional to H0.5m (m is a constant determined by a material). According to this fatigue damage detection sensor for structural materials and mounting method thereof, the sensor can provide a high sensing performance to stably and reliably determine the level of fatigue damage caused to a structural material, based on the rate and amount of crack propagation.

The guided-wave circuit includes a groove crossing a plurality of waveguides constituting the optical waveguides, a plate having optical characteristics spatially changed so as to adjust the optical characteristics at the intersections of the plate with the optical waveguides when the plate is inserted into the groove, and an adhesive for fixing the plate in the groove. The guided-wave circuit also includes both a phase adjusting plate and an amplitude adjusting plate to achieve further improvement in the optical characteristics. An apparatus for producing these optical characteristics adjusting plates is also included.

A material for valve seats comprising a wear resisting sintered ferro alloy formed by dispersing particles of a high speed steel in a matrix in which hard alloy particles are dispersed. Steps for forming include mixing particles of a matrix material, carbide material and a hard alloy, and blending the mixture with high speed steel particles, pressurizing and compacting the mixture after blending, then sintering them at 1000.degree. to 1200.degree. C. In the preferred method, at least one element of Fe, C, Ni, Co, Si or Mn is included as the matrix material, and at least one element of Fe, Cr, Mo or V as the carbide material and at least one element of Fe, Cr, Mo, Co, C or W as the hard alloy are prepared. Furthermore, the ferro alloy preferably includes the following amounts of the above mentioned elements, 0.5 to 2.0 wt % of C, 1 to 25 wt % of one or more of Cr, Mo, V, or W and 1 to 15 wt % of one or more of Co, Ni, Mn, or Si.
