Abstract:
A strength member sewing machine is provided which comprises upper and lower feeder spools, a collection spool and idlers positioned on a support structure. A cord supply, a fabric shaper, a speed control and a pressure foot lift are positioned on the structure. Fabric from the spools is kept in tension with the idlers while moving toward the fabric shaper. The fabric from the upper spool is crimped while the fabric from the lower spool remains flat underneath the shaper. Between the fabric layers, pull cords are pulled through from the cord supply thru the fabric shaper. The fabric with crimps and with the pull cords inside the crimps is sewn to the fabric from the lower spool to create casings with a pull cord in the internal space of each casing. The joined fabrics with the pull cords are collected by the collection spool as a finished product.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for measuring the core temperature of an animal or human. Thermal black body emissions from the eyeball are detected, at one or more wavelengths selected on the basis of various factors, including the ability of that wavelength to reach the interior of the eyeball. An illumination marker shines a spot of light on the eyeball, such that the spot corresponds to the area from which emissions are being detected.
Abstract:
A system and method for managing a herd of animals possibly requiring medical treatment, such as cows in a feedlot. The animals are herded individually into a chute, where identification data is collected from a tag, and core temperature data is collected using a special non-contacting core temperature sensor. The animal is tagged with a color coded tag representing a range of temperatures into which that animal's temperature falls. The animal is then delivered to a pen corresponding to that range of temperatures, where appropriate medicinal treatment is automatically dosed and applied to the animal.

A quintuplex mud pump has a crankshaft supported in the pump by external main bearings. The crankshaft has five eccentric sheaves, two internal main bearing sheaves, and two bull gears. Each of the main bearing sheaves supports the crankshaft by a main bearing. One main bearing sheave is disposed between second and third eccentric sheaves, while the other main bearing sheave disposed between third and fourth eccentric sheaves. One bull gear is disposed between the first and second eccentric sheaves, while the second bull gear is disposed between fourth and fifth eccentric sheaves. A pinion shaft has pinion gears interfacing with the crankshaft's bull gears. Connecting rods on the eccentric sheaves use roller bearings and transfer rotational movement of the crankshaft to pistons of the pump's fluid assembly.
Abstract:
A system and method are provided for detecting an acoustic signal in the presence of flow noise produced by the turbulent flow field that develops about a hosewall of a towed array. Pressure is sensed with pressure sensors at two diametrically-opposed locations at the surface of the hosewall over a period of time. The sensed pressure signals are used to generate an ensemble-averaged cross-spectra which effectively cancels out the flow noise while retaining the acoustic signal associated with a possible target of interest.
Abstract:
A load limiting break away arrangement for a subsea umbilical includes telescoping inner and outer bodies. The inner body includes multiple cross-bored holes; the outer body has slotted openings on its top and bottom sides. A shearing blade is positioned at one end of a top slot of the outer body. Individual umbilical tubes pass through a bottom slot of the outer body, through individual holes in the inner body and out a top slot of the outer body for attachment to multiple quick connect couplers on an umbilical termination head of an Umbilical Termination Assembly (UTA) and of an Electro-Hydraulic Distribution Module (EHDM). Tension resistant actuation members run between the UTA and EHDM so that when a snag of an umbilical occurs, the inner and outer bodies are pulled apart and the tubes are severed one by one by the blade of the outer body.
Abstract:
An insulation material useful in deep water well drilling applications includes an elastic polymer matrix, a plurality of rigid macro-beads within the elastic polymer matrix, an inelastic polymer matrix within the macro-beads, and a plurality of hollow, insulative micro-beads within the inelastic polymer matrix. The insulation material has adequate flexibility and elasticity to withstand thermal expansion and contraction, adequate compressive strength to withstand high water pressures, and good insulative properties at cold temperatures near the freezing point of water.
Abstract:
A rotary joint between a towed array and its towing vessel is provided having a drive plate, shaft and rotor attached to the towed array payout and take-in stowage drum and rotating with the drum. A thrust washer and bearing provide a rotating mechanical connection between these rotating components and the stationary housing and connector portions of the joint. The housing is fixed within the vessel and has an internal stator surrounding, and in electrical communication with the rotor. Electrical feeds from the towed array are connected to contact rings within the rotor, and the stator includes spring loaded pins in radial electrical contact with the rings as the rings rotate with the rotor. Electrical leads from the pins pass through the housing to the connector which is connected to the vessel's signal processing systems. In addition, the housing contains a pressure compensator within a passageway between the interior and exterior of the joint. The compensator has a piston sealed in the passageway and springs are provided to either side of the piston, such that the opposed expansion and contraction of the springs maintain a pressure differential over the piston.
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to a dual backseat valve assembly comprising a valve body having an interior valve chamber and a generally horizontal flow passage; a valve gate adapted to reciprocate vertically within said valve chamber; a valve stem adapted to be received in threaded engagement with a gate lift nut mounted in said gate such that rotation of said stem causes vertical movement of said gate and a valve bonnet fixed to said valve body receiving said stem therethrough; wherein the valve stem comprises a radially extending portion defining a downward facing surface, a first enlarged diameter portion proximate the radially extending portion and a reduced diameter portion adjacent the first enlarged diameter portion; a first backseat seal comprising a radially energized seal ring fixed relative to said bonnet and having a first sealing portion for sealing against said bonnet and a second sealing portion which is adapted to be spaced apart from said reduced diameter portion when said valve is in normal operation and to engage said first enlarged diameter portion only when said stem is in a backseated position with said valve in the open position; a second backseat seal for providing a seal between said stem and said bonnet when said stem is in a backseated position with said valve in the closed position; and a structure fixed relative to said bonnet defining an upward facing surface adapted to engage said downward facing surface when said valve is in the open position to thereby tighten and lock said stem in the backseated position when said stem is moved against the fixed structure.
Abstract:
An interface module assembly for disposition between a marine tow cable andn array of acoustic receivers includes a plurality of bodies interconnected in series by flexible tethers. A proximal one of the bodies is adapted for connection to the tow cable and a distal one of the bodies is adapted for connection to the array. An external coaxial cable extends between each two of the bodies and is in communication with other external coaxial cables by way of internal coaxial cables within the bodies.
