Abstract: A laser light emitting probe used in a medical treatment. It has longitudinally a base end to impinge on, a body to penetrate through and a tip end to emit from for laser light, comprising the tip end being covered with a light scattering surface and bending at a certain angle on a longitudinal cross section. Preferably, the tip end is covered with a surface layer containing laser light absorbing particles and laser light scattering particles having a larger refractive index than that of the material of the probe on the surface of at least from the bending part to the end part of the tip end. A producing method of the probe comprising tapering a laser light transmissable member at least at a tip end thereof, bending the transmissible member at the tip end, making contact the transmissible member with a dispersion including at least said two kinds of particles and laser light transmissible particles having a melting point not higher than that of the transmissible member, and baking the transmissible member at a temperature higher than the melting point of said transmissible particles and within a limit as transmissible member can keep its shape.

Abstract: A laser light emitter used in a medical treatment has an optical fiber which extends in a longitudinal direction and at the fore end portion thereof. The core of the fore end portion is not surrounded by a clad but exposed to serve as a laser light emitting portion. A holder supports the optical fiber. Part of or the whole of the emitting portion bends at a certain angle on a longitudinal cross section of the extending direction of the optical fiber. To ensure fixing of the optical fiber to the holder, the optical fiber preferably has a circular cross section, and the holder comprises a thin plate with a concave shaped recess along the edge to which the optical fiber is mounted. The optical fiber extends along the inner surface of the concave shaped recess along the edge of the holder and is fixed thereto by a heat resistant adhesive. To use the emitter in surgery, the holder is connected to a fore end of a hand piece held by an operator. The holder substantially supports the exposed core portion of the optical fiber and a base portion of the optical fiber.

Abstract: Laser thermotherapy apparatus including a laser splitter which branches laser energy from a laser source to laser guides or optical fibers, each guide having an emitting end. First and second switches are positioned, respectively, before the splitter and in the individual laser guides. Temperature sensors are provided to sample the temperature of living tissue located adjacent each guide emitting end. A controller turns the respective switches on and off in response to the sensed temperature thereby to maintain a predetermined, selectable tissue temperature.

Abstract: A medical laser probe for contact laser surgery wherein a surgical incision, for example, is made by direct and indirect laser heating of the tissue. Direct heating is achieved in the conventional manner by direct laser irradiation of the subject tissue. Indirect heating is achieved through the use of a probe tip specially coated with infrared absorbing material. This material serves to partially absorb and partially transmit the laser energy. The absorbed laser energy heats the probe tip thereby facilitating tissue vaporization when the probe is brought into contact with the tissue. The transmitted laser energy vaporizes the tissue by the conventional irradiation thereof. The tip surface is roughened prior to application of the infrared material to enhance adhesion while an optically transparent material is placed over the tip to preclude material damage or erosion during normal tip use.

Abstract: A medical and surgical laser probe comprised of a quartz optical fiber and a laser rod member optically connected thereto which is made of an artificial saphire and has a tapered portion so as to emit the incident laser beam from the tip end of the rod member without leaking it out from the tapered face. With this laser probe, laser irradiation in contact with the tissue is enabled and any desired medical and surgical treatment such as incision, coagulation, hemostasis can be attained effectively.
