The present invention provides a bi-active method of mounting a monolithic polycarbonate sheet or a laminate in a semi-rigid metallic framing system along two parallel sides of a rectangular shaped sheet or laminate with the two shorter parallel sides being unconstrained. In the case of a square shaped sheet, two parallel sides are supported in the semi-rigid frame, and the other two parallel sides are unconstrained. The semi-rigid frame utilizes cylindrically shaped hardware (i.e., bolts, rivets, studs, etc.) to hold the sheet or laminate. The semi-rigid frame is designed, via section and material properties, to flex and hinge about fixed mounting points along the length of the frame.

A thermoplastic molding composition having low haze values, suitable for optical applications is disclosed. The compositions contains a resinous component selected from the group consisting of (i) a homogeneous blend of polycarbonate resin and polycaprolactone and (ii) a copoly(carbonate-lactone) block or random copolymer, and melanin in an amount of 0.1 to 1.0 parts per hundred parts of weight of the resinous component.

Bischloroformate oligomer compositions are prepared by passing phosgene into a heterogeneous aqueous-organic mixture containing at least one dihydroxyaromatic compound, with simultaneous introduction of a base at a rate to maintain a specific pH range and to produce a specific volume ratio of aqueous to organic phase. By this method, it is possible to employ a minimum amount of phosgene. The reaction may be conducted batchwise or continuously. The bischloroformate composition may be employed for the preparation of cyclic polycarbonate oligomers or linear polycarbonate, and linear polycarbonate formation may be integrated with bischloroformate composition formation in a batch or continuous process.

Linear polycarbonates of controlled molecular weight are prepared by first reacting a bischloroformate composition with a monohydroxyaromatic compound in a system comprising water, a base and a suitable organic liquid, and then converting the resulting partially capped bischloroformate composition to linear polycarbonate by contact with an interfacial polycarbonate formation catalyst in an alkaline medium. By this method, the efficiency of the capping agent is improved.
