The process comprises contacting the hydrocarbon solvent with sulfuric acid in an amount sufficient to phase separate the silicon species and removing at least 20% by weight of the residual silicon species from the hydrocarbon solvent. The hydrocarbon solvent may be a polymerization solvent containing residual silicon species, and more than 80% by weight of the silicon species can be removed.

The present invention is a coupled radial anionic polymer comprising a polyhedral oligosilsesquioxane [POSS] of the formula [R—SiO3/2]n. POSS compounds having R=vinyl, glycidyldimethyl silyl, and isobutyl have been found effective in coupling anionic living polymers to yield radial polymers having 2 to 10 arms. Radial polymers of the present invention have been formed using POSS octamers and mixtures of POSS octamers, decamers and dodecamers. The present invention also relates to a process for coupling living anionic polymers with POSS compounds.

The capping of anionic polymers to make functionalized polymers is used to make heterotelechelic polymers by using a protected functional initiator to polymerize a polymer comprising a conjugated diene and then capping the polymer with low surface energy fluorocarbons. The protected functional groups are stable under a variety of conditions and then readily convert to more reactive terminal functional groups useful for making sealants, coatings, molded or extruded goods and fibers having low surface energy.
