A method and apparatus for implementing statistical process control (SPC) in a printing environment to address errant reads of control sensors is provided. The system uses SPC, in systems having feedback control based on control sensor data, to identify errant reads and ensure that such errant reads are not used in the applicable feedback loop. Unnecessary reaction to the errant reads is thus avoided.

A feedback control method for controlling an ununiform banding on a photoreceptor is disclosed that includes arranging optical sensors on a photoreceptor, transferring an amount of toner on a piece of paper, measuring the resulting amount of banding, and adjusting the parameters to decrease the amount of banding. A method of measuring low deposited masses of a substrate is disclosed, using either ETAC optical sensors or full width array sensors. Finally, a copy is disclosed including at least one of NC2 array sensors and ETAC sensors, a developer roll voltage source, a ROS intensity source, an input device and a controller.

The presently disclosed embodiment provides an interactive tool for printed image artifact characterization that successfully combines the advantages from both a human visual system and automated image quality characterization. In the interactive tool provided, the user may specify coarse level information, such as the region of interest in a print image, to be examined by the automated image-quality characterization algorithm, which can then employ sophisticated algorithms, e.g. signal processing, feature extraction, estimation and classification, to find precise fine-level descriptors.

A method and device detect printing defects on prints produced by an electrostatic printing device and, in response, place the electrostatic printing device into a diagnostic mode. While in the diagnostic mode, the method and device charge an image bearing surface of the electrostatic printing device to a uniform potential charge and disable all light emitting devices of the electrostatic printing device that could alter the uniform potential charge. Next, this method and device transfer marking material to the image bearing surface to create a test image and print at least one test patch by transferring the test image from the image bearing surface to a sheet of media. This method and device evaluate whether the test patch includes the printing defects and identify whether the light emitting devices of the electrostatic printing device are defective, based on whether the test patch includes printing defects.

Methods and systems print a multi-color test pattern using a printing device to create a printed test pattern when the printing device is producing a printing defect. The methods and systems scan the printed test pattern to produce a scanned image and decompose the scanned image into color blocks using the computerized device. The methods and systems create intensity profiles of the color blocks using the computerized device and compare at least two of the intensity profiles of different colors to determine whether the intensity profiles indicate correlated printing defects using the computerized device. The methods and systems indicate, through the computerized device, whether a potential defect within a common printing element of the printing device or is located within one or more of the color printing elements of the printing device, depending upon whether the intensity profiles have correlated printing defects.

Systems and methods of determining a predicted usable life of components, such as a photoreceptor, associated with an imaging device. The systems and methods include a power source configured to increase an electric field across the photoreceptor. A sensor or array is configured to detect charge deficient spots (CDS) in a charge transport layer (CTL) of the photoreceptor as a result of increasing the electric field. The systems and methods are configured to determine the predicted useable life of the photoreceptor based on the detected CDS. The systems and methods are further configured to output a report of the estimation. The estimation is conducted at fixed or variable intervals throughout the life of the photoreceptor and/or imaging device.

Disclosed is a method and apparatus for sensing residual toner mass after transfer of a xerographic image, to facilitate the identification and characterization of different types of transfer defects. The technique employed utilizes a nominal residual mass signature, measured at the start of a job, in conjunction with subsequent residual mass signature, where the calculated difference between the nominal and subsequent signatures is used to indicate transfer defects and changes in transfer efficiency.
