    Abstract: A system and method for sorting and selecting colors from a palette of colors are provided. A color identification standard representing the color spectrum is selected. The color identification standard comprises color groups from which color harmonies can be created. The colors are sorted by a first attribute of the color. For each first attribute level, the colors are further sorted to correspond to the color groups in the selected color identification standard. Each color is further sorted within its color group into a gradient of colors based on the amount of color from adjacent color groups that is present in each color and the number of colors in the color group. In a color palette so sorted, for each color corresponding available harmonious colors are generally sorted to about the same relative location within their respective color groups. The colors are further sorted by a second attribute of the color.

    Abstract: A paint color matching and coordinating system comprises an interface for receiving an input reference color, a processor capable of reading a memory, a memory including (1) instructions readable by the processor and (2) a database of architectural paint colors spanning all or most of the known color space, and a display generator. In use, the interface of the system receives an input reference color from a user. The processor selects a “reference paint color” from the database, the reference paint color being visually closer, with respect to color space, to the input reference color than any other paint color in the database. According to the invention, color space is divided into a plurality of fixed, generally equally sized, non-overlapping, contiguous portions, each color space portion being defined as the space of all colors within a band of hues within color space. The processor selects five sets of paint colors—one set from each of the color space portions that include the five hues that comprise the “five-way harmony” of the reference paint color. The processor may also select a sixth set of paint colors from the color space portion that includes the hue of the reference paint color. Finally, the processor directs the display generator to create a display of color samples of the reference paint color and of the first through sixth sets of paint colors.

    Abstract: A set of color gages for assisting in selecting harmonious color combinations in accordance with those found in nature and the method of using such gages. In nature all colors can be classified into one of three groups called Solis, Aero and Aqua. All colors within each one of these three groups are compatible with each other, i.e., appear harmonious to the human eye. In addition, Aero colors are compatible with either Solis or Aqua colors. Solis and Aqua colors are not compatible. The gages are preferably circular, and contain a plurality of colored segments. The colored segments of the color gages are Solis, Aero, and Aqua versions of each of the six colors red, pink, yellow, green, purple, white, brown, and blue, with the exception of Aqua Brown and Solis Blue since these colors do not appear in nature. The colored segments can be compared to a selected dominant color to determine which of the three groups the dominant color belongs, and to determine which group's colors should be selected in order to achieve harmonious color combinations in accordance with natural principles.
