Methods and apparatus include a hair iron having a controller and a heater between first and second arms movable relative to each other between open and closed positions. The controller connects or not the heater to a line voltage to heat hair when placed between the arms during use. A proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller communicates with a thermistor measuring a current temperature of the heater and makes requests of the controller to operate the heater at a setpoint temperature. In various embodiments, the heater heats to full power during warm-up and operates thereafter at lower temperatures based on a reading of the line voltage and a time to adjust the current temperature to the desired setpoint temperature.

Traditional temperature-control products have the problem that the temperature of the working surface reaches the setting temperature too slowly when heating up or recovering from a temperature drop. A traditional temperature control circuit and temperature-settings selector components are modified to solve this problem. When heating begins, the modified circuit increases the initial setting temperature to be above the target setting temperature. The modified circuit then adjusts the setting temperature by measuring the heating power consumption. Once the working surface of the temperature control product reaches the initial setting temperature, the heating power consumption drops and the modified circuit reduces the temperature setting to the target setting temperature. The temperature control product can rapidly achieve the target temperature. A positive-temperature-coefficient heating component is used in the temperature control product.

Ready light circuit is provided comprising a simple third switch blade added to standard thermostat two-blade switch in electric iron. Light is activated when bimetallic element of switch drives third blade into engagement with other blade as iron reaches set temperature. Light stays illuminated as long as main contacts of standard-type blades remain open. When thermostat calls for more heat, light in circuit which is across main contacts, is shorted out.
