    摘要: The use of aluminum sulfate as a dessicant for drying the starting materials used in polymerization reactions employing readily hydrolyzable catalysts is disclosed. The aluminum sulfate is allowed to remain in the reaction mixture during polymerization, and, indeed, may advantageously be allowed to remain in the reaction product without any deleterious effect.

    摘要: A copolycarbonate of the formula wherein 5 to 50 mole percent of the total number of R1 groups is derived from a monomer of formula (2) wherein each Rf is independently at each occurrence a halogen atom, a hydrocarbon group having 1 to 10 carbons, or a halogen substituted hydrocarbon group having 1 to 10 carbons, and n is 0 to 4; and 50 to 95 mole percent of the R1 groups are derived from a dihydroxy compound of formula HO—R5—OH, wherein at least 60% of the R5 groups are aromatic, and the dihydroxy compound of formula (3) is not a compound of formula (2), and wherein the copolycarbonate comprises at least 10% fewer carbonate linkages of formula (4) than would be theoretically obtained in a random copolymer made from the same ratio of the monomer of formula (2) and the dihydroxy compound of formula (3).

    摘要: A soil release promoting copolymer of polyethylene terephthalate and polyoxyethylene terephthalate (PET-POET) having a weight average molecular weight in the range of 15,000 to 35,000, and a PET:POET molar ratio of about 2:1 to 6:1, is prepared by reacting polyethylene terephthalate with polyethylene glycol in the presence of a catalyst system including both antimony trioxide and calcium acetate or both titanium isopropoxide and sodium isopropoxide. The PET-POET copolymer provides improved soil release properties for oily and greasy stains from polyester fabrics at high and low wash temperatures and is stable even at high alkalinity levels. The starting PET can advantageously be obtained from scrap bottles.

    摘要: Condensation polymers of high molecular weight, such as polyesters, polyureas, and polyamides, are usually prepared at temperatures of 200.degree. C. or greater. However, by utilizing the catalyst system of the present invention condensation polymers can be synthesized at much lower temperatures. These catalyst systems are comprised of (1) a silicon-phosphorus composition which contains at least one divalent oxygen atom which is bonded directly to a tetravalent silicon atom and a trivalent or pentavalent phosphorus atom; and (2) at least one acid acceptor. For example, P(OSiR.sub.3).sub.3 wherein R can be an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon radical, can be used in conjunction with a basic solvent as a catalyst system. Polymeric agents having pendant diphenylphosphine dichloride groups can also be used in conjunction with an acid acceptor as a catalyst system.
