Abstract: A method for producing a water-based polyester resin includes a first step and a second step. The first step includes causing an ester formation reaction and a depolymerization reaction using a recycled polyester, a polycarboxylic acid component including a polycarboxylic acid residue and excluding terephthalic acid, and a polyalcohol component. The second step includes causing a polycondensation reaction by reducing pressure. The first step includes using: the recycled polyester to such an amount that makes proportion of a terephthalic acid residue equal to or greater than 20% by mass and equal to or less than 72% by mass; and a metal-sulfonate-group-containing polycarboxylic acid compound to such an amount that makes proportion of the metal-sulfonate-group-containing polycarboxylic acid residue equal to or greater than 5% by mass and equal to or less than 32% by mass. The resin thus produced has an acid value equal to or less than 10 mgKOH/g.

Aspects of the present disclosure further include compositions of and methods for producing a polybutylene succinate nanocomposite, including dispersing cellulose nanocrystals in 1,4 butanediol (BDO) to form a cellulose-BDO dispersion and esterifying the cellulose-BDO dispersion and succinate anhydride to form a plurality of polybutylene succinate oligomers. The polybutylene succinate oligomers are condensed to form a polybutylene succinate nanocomposite.

Abstract: This disclosure provides a process for removing acrolein or allyl alcohol from a polyester composition, the process comprising: combining a polyester composition derived from 1,3-propanediol with an amino amide or a primary amine; wherein the amino amide or the primary amine is combined in sufficient quantities to scavenge acrolein or allyl alcohol produced from degradation of the polyester composition. An analysis of reactions between anthranilamide (AAA) and acrolein demonstrates how amines or amino amides can scavenge acrolein from thermally processed poly(trimethylene terephthalate) and poly(trimethylene furan-2,5-dicarboxylate), and thermodynamic models are presented as guidance for matching targets with scavenging agent.
