A hot wire igniter for igniting a gaseous or atomized fuel is disclosed. The coil of the hot wire igniter is formed from a thin high temperature, iron, chromium, aluminum alloy having a center section that is tightly wound. The coil turns initially do not touch one another and each end of the coil is attached to a rod that is received within an insulator member. The rods are connected to a power source. The coil portion of the hot wire igniter is received within a gas collector box which is attached to the burner to be ignited. Application of the power source to the lead-in rods causes the coil of wire to reach a temperature in excess of the ignition temperature of the fuel mixture which surrounds same causing the ignition of the mixture.

A gas burner head assembly characterized by a flame-leading pipe strategically positioned between a burning plate and an igniter to provide a climbing path for the flame. The igniter is a part of a standard gas oven and has a fixed height. The burning plate rests on top of a housing that confines a gas-air mixing chamber. The upper open end of the flame-leading pipe is secured on an upper rim of a peripheral wall of the housing. The lower open end of the flame-leading pipe is aligned to the igniter and the main gas nozzle of a valve module mounted on the oven body. By leading the ignited flame to climb from a lower level located by the igniter to a higher level positioned by the burning plate, the gas burner head effectively eliminates the undesirable ignition obstruction while accommodating the standard gas oven valve assembly and igniter.

In a cutting torch machine having an internal ignition device on a cutting oxygen channel which is in communication with an ignition gas generating mixing stage, the mixing stage can be connected via a controlling heating oxygen pressure reducer and at least one heating oxygen solenoid valve to a heating oxygen source and via a fuel gas solenoid valve to a fuel gas duct. The cutting torch machine includes, on a valve body, connecting nipples for fuel gas, for heating oxygen and for cutting oxygen. Preferably, a heating gas injector is provided within the valve body. In order to increase operation safety, the mixing stage (injector), heating oxygen pressure reducer and solenoid valves are disposed within the valve body, and the mixing stage is connected via the fuel gas solenoid valve to the connecting nipple for fuel gas and via the heating oxygen pressure reducer and the heating oxygen solenoid valve to the connecting nipple for heating oxygen.

An igniter is positioned within the nozzle holder and acts to ignite any of the multi-liquid fuels which may be used with the burner. The invention is an improved chemical firearm device that is operated and fired by an electro-mechanical system. The firearm device is of a pistol configuration, having a tank-like handle or hand-grip for containing the chemical to be discharged. A dual-action mechanical trigger mechanism is provided for first discharging the chemical through a nozzle in the barrel portion of the pistol-like device, which can be aimed like a pistol toward an assailant or target, and second to ignite the chemical during discharge if desired. An optional action is available whereby the ignition of the already discharged chemical on the assailant, or on the target, may be delayed until desired or needed in a point of close combat with the assailant or at the target. Another optional action is the availability of a high-voltage charge to stun and disable an assailant during close combat without the use of the chemical. Other uses include destruction of pest nests, and similar situations.

A catalytic heater and control system is provided for efficiently preheating internal combustion engines in cold weather to facilitate starting. Heat is applied by transmission, by infrared radiation and by convection to the fluid contained within a heat-receptive housing (preferably the crankcase) of the engine. The heater comprises a shallow housing having a heattransmissive side which is affixed in contact with preferably the sump of the crankcase of the engine, which housing has a heatshielded forward shell or side and within which core defines a shell combustion chamber adjacent the attached conductive side of the casing. Within the combustion chamber is mounted a catalytic reactor extending longitudinally of the housing with an exposed substantial surface thereof facing rearwardly. Hydrocarbon fuel is obtained from the fuel source of the engine and, by control, is admitted intermittently in extremely small amounts to a conductive generating or vapor tube having vapor discharge orifice or discharge means disposed adjacent to the catalytic element. The system also includes an electrical heating coil for starting the heater or burner and which is preferably embedded in a pad upon which is superimposed the catalytic material, usually a pigment or sheeting carrying impregnated platinum or the like. The control system includes means for energizing the heating coil for only a short period for starting of the combustion operation and generation of the hydrocarbon gas or vapor.

An electric source initially impresses upon the heating element a voltage approximately 1.5 times its rated voltage and the electric current at the secondary side of the transformer at the time when the heating element has reached the desired temperature is detected by a current relay. At this time, taps on the transformer are switched to impress the rated voltage on the element to obtain the desired igniting temperature.
