    摘要: Provided is an optical device which can control a beam quality of outgoing light. An optical device (10) includes an entrance fiber bundle (12), an exit fiber (13), and a reduced diameter part (11). The reduced diameter part (11) has (i) an entrance end surface (11a) and (ii) an exit end surface (11b) which is narrower in area than the entrance end surface (11a). In a case where the entrance end surface (11a) is viewed from a normal direction of the entrance end surface (11a), a center (C2) of the exit end surface (11b) deviates from a center (C1) of the entrance end surface (11a).

    摘要: In one example, a device includes a bus waveguide to carry a light of a carrier wavelength, a first ring waveguide with a first modulator, a first heater to adjust a resonance wavelength of the first ring waveguide, and a second ring waveguide with a second modulator. The first ring waveguide and the second ring waveguide are coupled to the bus waveguide and are to modulate the light of the carrier wavelength to impart one of at least four optical power levels to the light. In another example, a device includes, a bus waveguide, a first ring waveguide with a first modulator, and a second ring waveguide with a second modulator. The first ring waveguide and the second ring waveguide are coupled to the bus waveguide and are to modulate a light of a carrier wavelength to impart one of at least four optical power levels to the light.

    摘要: Overclad fiber optic couplers are made by inserting the uncoated portions of a plurality of optical fibers into the bore of a glass tube, collapsing the tube midregion onto the fibers and stretching the central portion of the tube midregion. The present method utilizes a glass tube the bore of which includes a circular portion and a recess. A plurality of optical fibers are sequentially inserted into the tube by threading the coated end into the circular bore portion until the uncoated portion of fiber is centered in the tube. The uncoated portion of fiber is then transferred laterally into the bore recess. After all fibers have been threaded into the circular bore portion and transferred to the recess, a filler fiber is inserted into the circular bore portion. The resultant coupler exhibits low excess loss.

    摘要: The protective cladding for a mono-mode directional coupler made of at least two incoming and outgoing fiber optic waveguides which are fused to one another along a coupling segment comprises at least two open cladding parts which can be connected to form a tube-shaped cladding. The material of the cladding parts has the same coefficient of expansion as the waveguide material of the mono-mode directional coupler. The protective cladding, being mechanically tightly connected with the incoming and outgoing fiber optic waveguides while leaving open the coupling segment of the mono-mode directional coupler, is closed off in a gas-tight manner such that in the case of temperature changes, there are no mechanical tensions in the coupling segment.

    摘要: A rigid, low expansion formable housing composition can be used to package optical waveguide couplers. The housing is in intimate contact with and strongly bonded to the coupler being packaged. The housing composition includes a formable polymeric resin, a glass-ceramic or ceramic or glass filler, and, optionally, strengthening fibers. The filler has a low thermal expansion to compensate for the high expansion of the resin. A moisture barrier layer may be placed around the housing composition, and it is possible to incorporate a shock absorbing material between the housing and the moisture barrier layer.

    摘要: Disclosed is a fiber amplifier system in which a gain fiber is operatively combined with a fiber optic coupler having first and second coupler optical fibers. The coupler fibers are fused together along a portion of their lengths to form a wavelength dependent coupling region whereby most of the light power of a wavelength .lambda..sub.S couples between them, and most of the light power of a wavelength .lambda..sub.P that is introduced into the first fiber remains in it. The mode field diameter of the first coupler fiber is substantially matched to that of the gain fiber and is smaller than that of the second coupler fiber. One end of the first coupler fiber is spliced to the gain fiber. The difference in mode field diameters between said couplers is sufficient create a difference in coupler fiber propagation constants in the coupling region which degrades the coupling of the .lambda..sub.S signal. To overcome the difference in coupler fiber propagation constants in the coupling region, and thereby increase the coupled signal power to an acceptable level, a fiber characteristic, whose affect on MFD is insignificant, is modified in one of the coupler fibers.
