摘要: A method and apparatus for routing light signals. A light signal is sent into a first optical fiber core in an optical coupler having an input region, a coupling region, and an output region. The first optical fiber core is located in a cladding having a substantially circular cross section. The light signal is coupled between the first optical fiber core and one of the first optical fiber core and a second optical fiber core in the coupling region of the optical coupler based on a position of the coupling region as the light signal travels through the coupling region to the output region of the optical coupler using a switching system configured to move the coupling region between one of a first position and a second position.

摘要: A dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) filter includes an optical fiber coupling device, having at least one multiple core optical fiber fusion coupled to a second optical fiber, and a dual core fiber grating. According to an especially preferred embodiment of the invention, two multiple core fibers are used with each multiple core fiber having a first core with a first effective index of refraction and a first propagation constant and a second core with a second effective index of refraction and a second propagation constant. Such an arrangement ensures a close match in effective index and propagation constant between the respective second cores. The first and second multiple core fibers are aligned and fused together such that the second core of the first multiple core fiber is in sufficient proximity to the second core of the second multiple core fiber as to obtain overlapping mode fields and efficient coupling of propagating optical signals therebetween, while the first core of the first multiple core fiber is sufficiently separated from the first core of the second multiple core fiber as to obtain weak or substantially no coupling of propagating optical signals therebetween. Accordingly, any signals propagating along the first core of the first fiber experience only very low loss, on the order of 0.2 dB. The dual core fiber grating provides wavelength selectivity to accommodate either wavelength addition or wavelength subtraction, depending upon whether a multiplexing or demultiplexing functionality is desired.

摘要: An optical fiber-based sensor is described that is suitable for operation in a gas-rich environment. The sensor comprises a chamber into which are mounted one or more segments of optical fiber, into which are inscribed a plurality of sensor gratings. Each of the plurality of sensor gratings is configured to have the same wavelength shift over time in response to a change in gas diffusion, such that gas diffusion parameters are excluded in the determination of the respective amount of change in temperature, applied strain, and gas diffusion. Also described is a fiber, and techniques for making same, comprising of cores extend through a common cladding. The cores are doped so as to create, in conjunction with the cladding, a plurality of waveguides having the same wavelength shift over time is response to a change in gas diffusion, but different wavelength shifts in response to changes in other parameters.

摘要: A thermally diffused dual-core (TDDC) waveguide is provided that has a pair of spaced cores 12,14 disposed within a cladding 16. The waveguide 10 is formed of a glass material having the appropriate dopants to allow light 15 to propagate in either direction along the cores 12,14. The TDDC waveguide is formed by heating a portion 22 of the dual-core waveguide 10 to symmetrically diffuse the dopants of the cores 12,14 into the cladding 16. Consequently, the optical mode fields of the cores spread beyond the optical mode field of each original core such that the optical field in one core 12 excites the optical field in the adjacent core 14 to optically couple the two cores 12,14. The amount of diffusion of the core into the cladding is dependent on the temperature of the heat and the time the heat is applied to the dual-core waveguide. The cores may be diffused so that the cores overlap to thereby create a unitary core. The TDDC waveguide may be used to provide a coupler or wavelocker device.

摘要: An optical fiber (7) exhibits varying transmission characteristics in different strain states and can have an S-shaped microbend. For producing such a fiber it is heated locally in a small region, as viewed in the longitudinal direction of the fiber, and then the portions of the fiber (1) located at the two sides of the heated region are displaced in relation to each other in a transverse direction in relation to the longitudinal direction of the fiber. It can be performed in a conventional fusion-splicing apparatus for optical fibers. Alternatively, a laser can be used as a heating source, what is particularly suitable for processing optical fibers having longitudinal cavities in order to infer to it similar transmission characteristics. The optical fibers produced by this method are suited for use as sensors, e.g. strain gauges.

摘要: An optical amplifier for telecommunication lines over which communication signals at a predetermined wavelength are transmitted. The amplifier has portions of two optically coupled fibers, at least one of the fibers being an active fiber, interconnected by a length of active fiber connected to the one fiber of successive portions. Preferably, the active fibers are doped with erbium, and the coupling wavelength of the two fibers is different from the communication signal wavelength so that energy of the spontaneous emission of erbium is transferred from the one fiber to the other fiber and absorbed in the latter permitting amplification of communication signals in a range of wavelengths corresponding to the tolerance range of commercial laser signal emitters.
