    Abstract: A bush assembly is inserted into the rotor hub around a cylindrical control body which is partially extending into the bush to fill the interior of the bush. In such device, where fluid flows through the control body and the working chambers in the rotor of the machine, leakage escaped through the clearance between the control body and the rotor. Due to the novel bush assembly the respective high pressure is led through passages which extend half way around the bush into recesses diametrically located in the bush. There the pressure is utilized to press respective seal-portions towards the control body to at least partially seal the escape of leakage, while maintaining a radial pressure balance between the control body and the bush.

    Abstract: A piston of a light alloy matrix material having a cavity for containing heat insulating air immediately below its head or a cavity for passing cooling oil inside the grooved side wall is manufactured by preforming a precursory member having the shape of the cavity from an extractable material which remains in solid state at room temperature and is convertible into a fluid, gas or liquid when heated at a temperature below the melting point of the matrix metal. The precursory member is disposed in place in a pressure casting mold having a cavity corresponding to the shape of the piston, and covered with a porous member stable to the molten matrix metal. A head member of heat resisting metal material to constitute at least a portion of the piston head may be disposed on the mold cavity bottom. Molten matrix metal is then cast into the mold cavity and a pressure is applied thereto to form a piston-shaped casting having precursory member and porous member embedded therein. Finally the casting is heated at a sufficient temperature to gasify or liquefy the extractable material of the precursory member material into fluid, which is extracted from the casting, leaving a cavity at the location of the precursory member. Alternatively, the precursory member may be formed from a composite material of a gasifiable material and a stable material whereby the cavity is given as a porous insert of the stable material which is left after the extraction of the gasifiable material by heating.

    Abstract: A piston comprises a crown (10) and a ring band (11) carried on two gudgeon pin bosses (12a, 12b) by two supports (20). There are upper and lower pairs of struts (21a, 21b, 21c, 21d) on each side of the gudgeon pin bosses, one strut of each pair projecting from one gudgeon pin boss and the other strut of each pair projecting from the other gudgeon pin boss. Each pair carries a respective arcuate skirt portion (22) which extends only part the way round the and is symmetrical about a plane including the piston axis (28) and normal to the gudgeon pin bore axis. There are thus axially and circumferentially extending gaps (25) of constant axial width both between the upper arcuate skirt portions and the ring band between the upper arcuate skirt portions and the lower arcuate skirt portions. This provides a lightweight piston which is very conformable and can be fitted tightly in an associated cylinder or liner to reduce noise.

    Abstract: A reinforced piston is provided for an internal combustion engine. The uppermost piston ring groove is as close as possible to the crown of the piston. At least the lower surface of the groove is defined by an en-cast insert and overlying this is a portion of the crown reinforced by fibres, thus allowing this portion to be thin and the spacing between the ring groove and the upper surface of the crown to be minimized. The reinforced crown portion also holds the insert against axial separating movement. The crown can be provided with a combustion bowl whose entrance is reinforced by the fibres.

    Abstract: A piston and connecting rod assembly comprises a one-piece yoke thrust bearing disposed between the piston and connecting rod to provide bearing surfaces therebetween. The piston includes a pair of wrist pin bosses disposed therein and in spaced-apart facing relationship. The bosses have oppositely disposed faces with axially aligned bores therein, and the faces have disposed therein respective shoulder-like depressions. The yoke thrust bearing comprises a pair of washer portions in abutment against respective boss faces and interconnected by a yoke element, and the washer portions have respective projections conformably received in respective depressions, thereby aligning the holes in the washers with the bores and preventing rotation of the yoke thrust bearing in the piston. On end of the connecting rod is received between the washer portions, and a wrist pin is passed through the boss bores, washer portions, and the connecting rod opening to thereby pivotally connect the piston and connecting rod together. A method of assembling the piston, connecting rod, wrist pin, and yoke thrust bearing is provided.

    Abstract: A composite thermal shield includes an external solid layer of heat and corrosion-resistant metal bonded to a permeable layer of metal. The composite is mechanically affixed to the substrate metal of an engine component, by a method wherein the substrate metal becomes entrained within the interstices of the permeable metal layer. In a first preferred form the permeable metal layer is comprised of a fibrous stainless steel woven wire mesh which is sintered or brazed to the external stainless steel heat and corrosion-resistant layer. In a preferred process, an aluminum substrate piston is formed to include the composite shield, whereby the aluminum is pressed into the permeable layer during formation of the piston in a mold. In a second preferred form, the piston includes an insulation layer wherein two layers of stainless steel wire mesh have an intermediate stainless steel layer sandwiched between them. The bottom layer of wire mesh is subjected to the afore-described mechanical bonding with the substrate aluminum, while the upper layer, positioned between the top and intermediate stainless steel layers, operates purely as an insulation layer.

    Abstract: This invention relates to engine parts having high durability, which can be used at high operating temperatures.
