    Abstract: A ducted combustion system for an internal combustion engine includes a combustion chamber, a fuel injector, and a plurality of ducts. The combustion chamber is defined between a flame deck surface of a cylinder head and a piston crown of a piston disposed within a cylinder bore. Further, the fuel injector is configured to inject fuel into the combustion chamber as a plurality of fuel jets. The plurality of ducts is disposed within the combustion chamber between the flame deck surface and the piston crown. The plurality of ducts is disposed such that each of the plurality of fuel jets at least partially enters one of the plurality of ducts. The at least one of the plurality of ducts is configured to move to vary an angle of a corresponding at least one of the plurality of fuel jets relative to a longitudinal axis of the fuel injector.

    Abstract: A piston for an engine is provided. The piston includes a body having a crown disposed about a central axis. The crown includes an inner circumference and an outer circumference. The piston includes a central chamber transversely disposed within the body and recessed with respect to the crown. The piston includes a central mound disposed within the central chamber about the central axis. The piston also includes a bowl extending from the central mound towards the crown. The piston further includes a passageway provided on the inner circumference of the crown. The passageway includes a slot defined by a first surface inclined at a first angle with respect to the central axis. The slot is adapted to allow flow of a fuel from the central chamber towards the outer circumference of the crown.

    Abstract: An internal combustion engine comprises a fuel injector 31, a spark plug 16, a piston 14 having a cavity 91, a swirl control device 95, and a control system 70. The cavity is formed so as to change in distance from the fuel injector to a side wall surface of the cavity, in the circumferential direction. The system performs ignition assist control for successively performing injections of main fuel and ignition assist fuel, makes an air-fuel mixture formed by the ignition assist fuel burn by flame propagation by the spark plug, and makes the remaining fuel burn by pre-mix compression self-ignition. The system controls the swirl control device during the ignition assist control so that when the engine load is high, the fuel sprayed heads toward parts of the side wall surface which are short in distances from the fuel injector.

    Abstract: A ducted combustion system is disclosed. The ducted combustion system includes a combustion chamber bound by a flame deck surface of a cylinder head of an internal combustion engine and by a piston top surface of a piston disposed within the internal combustion engine. The system includes a fuel injector including one or more orifices, the one or more orifices injecting fuel into the combustion chamber as at least one fuel jet. The system includes at least one duct disposed within the combustion chamber between the flame deck surface and the piston top surface, the at least one duct including one or more structural tabs proximate to an outlet of the at least one duct and being disposed such that the at least one fuel jet, at least partially, enters one of the at least one duct upon being injected into the combustion chamber.

    Abstract: An opposed piston engine includes approximately spherical combustion chamber formed by the two opposed pistons in a single cylinder and an intake manifold including gas hooks. The combustion chamber has a small cone shaped extension on each side leading to each of two opposed injectors located in the cylinder wall where the two pistons meet at the top of their stroke. The combustion chamber configuration reduces the surface area of the chamber and increases the burn length by a significant amount compared to known designs. The gas hooks in the intake manifold restrict the flow of exhaust gases into the intake manifold long enough for the pressure in the cylinder to blow down and the exhaust gasses to attain high velocity passing out through the exhaust manifold, allowing the intake ports to be uncovered before the exhaust ports.
