Abstract: A surgical instrument comprises a spacer element comprising a proximal region and a distal region, an end effector coupled to a distal end of the spacer element, a user hand interface at a proximal end of the spacer element, and a securing element for securing the proximal end of the spacer element to a user wrist. The user hand interface comprises an elongate member including a lumen and extending from a distal end to a proximal end of the user hand interface. The user hand interface further comprises an actuation cable extending within the lumen from the distal end to the proximal end of the user hand interface. The proximal region of the spacer element comprises a curved portion extending from the user hand interface. The user hand interface is movable in a manipulation space proximal of the distal region and distal of the proximal end of the spacer element.

Abstract: A surgical port includes a first end, a second end opposite the first end, and a longitudinal axis extending through the first end and the second end. An outer sidewall extends between the first end and the second end. First and second channels extend through the port from the first end to the second end. A first electrically conductive portion extends from the first channel to the outer sidewall, and a second electrically conductive portion extends from the second channel to the outer sidewall. The first electrically conductive portion provides a first electrically conductive path between the first channel and the outer sidewall and the second electrically conductive portion provides a second electrically conductive path the second channel and the outer sidewall. The second electrically conductive path is separate from the first electrically conductive path. Devices and methods relate to surgical ports.

Abstract: An instrument sterile adapter for coupling a surgical instrument and an instrument carriage includes an adapter control surface that extends control features of a control surface of the instrument carriage and receives an instrument control surface of the surgical instrument. A shaft receiving slot is positioned in the adapter control surface to receive an elongate tube of the surgical instrument when the adapter control surface receives the instrument control surface of the surgical instrument. The elongate tube may couple a proximal control mechanism of the surgical instrument to an end effector. The instrument sterile adapter may include a convex curved surface substantially perpendicular to and facing the adapter control surface to receive a corresponding concave curved surface on the instrument control surface. A bullet portion on the convex curved surface may engage a bullet receiving feature in the corresponding concave curved surface on the instrument control surface.

Abstract: A system for controlling movement of a remotely controlled steerable instrument may comprise a flexible instrument comprising a steerable portion configured to articulate to change a shape of the steerable portion. The system may also comprise a shape sensing device comprising a first resistance-changing flexible sensor. The first resistance-changing flexible sensor may be configured to generate a signal indicative of a first bend change in the steerable portion. The system may also comprise a controller in signal communication with the first resistance-changing flexible sensor. The controller may be logically coupled to the flexible instrument and is configured to output a control signal to articulate the steerable portion of the flexible instrument in response to receiving at least the signal from the first resistance-changing flexible sensor.

Abstract: An instrument comprises a flexible body comprising a proximal portion, a distal portion, and an inner sheath within the proximal portion. The inner sheath comprises a wall and a plurality of conduits extending through the wall within the proximal portion. A distal end of each conduit terminates proximal to the distal portion. The inner sheath further comprises a plurality of protrusions within the proximal portion. Each protrusion surrounds a portion of a corresponding conduit. The flexible body further comprises a steerable tube extending within the distal portion. The steerable tube comprises a wall and a plurality of grooves in the wall. The instrument further comprises a plurality of tendons extending from the proximal portion, beyond the distal ends of the plurality of conduits, and into the distal portion. In the proximal portion, each tendon extends through a corresponding conduit. In the distal portion, each tendon extends within a corresponding groove.

Abstract: An imaging system comprises an image capturing device, a viewer, a control element, and a processor. The control element controls or adjusts an image characteristic of one of the image capturing device and the viewer. The processor is programmed to determine a depth value relative to the image capturing device, determine a desirable adjustment to the control element by using the determined depth value, and control adjustment of the control element to assist manual adjustment of the control element to the desirable adjustment. The processor may also be programmed to determine whether the adjustment of the control element is to be automatically or manually adjusted and control adjustment of the control element automatically to the desirable adjustment if the control element is to be automatically adjusted.

Abstract: Robotic and/or surgical devices, systems, and methods include kinematic linkage structures and associated control systems configured to control movement of passive or under-actuated joints by coordinated joint braking of the under-actuated joints concurrent with driving of one or more driven joints. In one aspect, the methods include driving a set-up structure by pivoting an orienting platform supporting multiple manipulators back-and-forth in opposite directions while selectively braking the under-actuated joints to inhibit passive joint movement away from a reference joint state and releasing braking to facilitate movement of the joints toward the reference until each of the under-actuated joints of the multiple manipulators are at the respective reference states. In another aspect, a joint brake controller is provided that receives a motor torque input and converts the input to a brake control input by determining an impulse applied variable braking to deplete the impulse over time.

Abstract: A teleoperational assembly is disclosed which includes an operator control system and a plurality of manipulators configured to control the movement of medical instruments in a surgical environment. The manipulators are teleoperationally controlled by the operator control system. The system further includes a processing unit configured to display an image of a field of view of the surgical environment, determine association information about the manipulators and the operator control system, and display badges near the medical instruments in the image of the field of view of the surgical environment. The badges display the association information for the medical instrument they appear associated with.

Abstract: In a multicore optical fiber sensor, an absorptive material integrated into the cladding, or into a waveguide core not used for sensing, may facilitate sensing. The absorptive material is absorptive to light in a wavelength band in which the fiber sensor is configured to operate. Coating such a fiber sensor with a material whose refractive index is smaller than that of the cladding may be done with reduced signal mixing.
