Abstract: A variable efficiency filter media. The variable efficiency filter media is a composite media formed of at least two different types of filter media, such as standard efficiency media and high efficiency media. The variable efficiency filter media has at least two different efficiency levels. The different efficiency levels can be spread across different zones. The filter media types for both the standard and high efficiency media can be spun media, melt blown media, nanofiber media, micro-glass media, cellulose media, carded staple fiber media, and the like. The variable efficiency filter media may be produced by any of an air laid or wet laid process.

Abstract: A filtration assembly includes a filter housing and a filter element. The filter housing includes a base and a cover including an underside having one or more retainer features. The cover is removably coupled to the base. The filter element is removably installed within the base when the cover is coupled to the base. The filter element includes filter media and an endplate coupled to one end of the filter media. The endplate includes an outer perimeter and one or more engagement features protruding from the outer perimeter. The one or more engagement features engage the one or more retainer features in the cover upon installation of the endplate into the cover, thereby coupling the endplate to the cover.

The flow passage is formed by a first passage surface and a second passage surface. The flow passage includes a first end in fluid communication with the cover opening. A second end is in fluid communication with the second housing opening through the open portion of the cover surface. The flow passage extends radially outward from the cover opening.

Abstract: A filter element for filtering a fluid that comprises a pleated filter media and a support structure. The pleated filter media comprises pleats that define an upstream gap along an upstream surface of the pleated filter media and a downstream gap along a downstream surface of the pleated filter media. The support structure extends along the downstream surface of the pleated filter media and supports the pleats. The support structure is folded into two layers comprising a first layer and a second layer within the downstream gap. The first layer inner surface and the second layer inner surface are positioned adjacent to each other within the downstream gap. The support structure comprises at least one spacer that increases a distance between the first layer outer surface and the second layer outer surface such that the differential pressure drop through portion of the support structure that is within the downstream gap is decreased.

The filter media is HSRC filter media. As such, the filter media has a higher resistance to compressibility than traditional coalescer filter media, such as filter media used in low-speed rotating coalescer arrangements or stationary coalescer arrangements.

Abstract: An anti-counterfeiting mechanism for a filter element to specifically, and preferably uniquely, identify a filter with a conductive pattern or path of conductive materials preferably either embedded (thin film circuit) under the surface, or over molded on, a portion of the filter. The conductive materials are preferably positioned at the filter end cap. The resistance of the filter element is an identifier that is preferably associated with the OEM manufacturer's labeling (such as product number) and/or other branding of the component. This electrical resistance signature permits rapid identification of counterfeit filters.

Abstract: A replacement filter element having a removable pin attached to the filter element is described. The removable pin is attached to the filter element via a first interference fit. When the replacement filter element is installed into a filtration system having a drain valve with an internal draft, the removable pin seals onto the drain valve and forms a second interference fit between the drain valve and the pin. The pin seals an opening in the drain valve. The second interference fit is stronger than the first interference. Accordingly, when the replacement filter element is removed from the filter housing (e.g., during a service event of the replacement filter element), the pin detaches from the replacement filter element and remains positioned within the drain valve thereby preventing fluid from leaking from the housing when the filter element is removed. The pin permanently plugs the drain valve once installed.

Abstract: Filter media including one or multiple sheets of filter media, an upstream inlet, and a downstream outlet. A pleat pack can be formed by alternately folding a flat sheet along pleat fold lines with a high media surface density. The flat sheet of filter media may include a separation geometry feature or separation mechanism that maintains a separation distance between adjacent pleats of the filter media. A separation geometry can comprise one or more embossments forming a raised surface, an inlet spacer mesh and/or an outlet spacer mesh positioned between adjacent pleats, and/or an adhesive bead. The upstream inlet receives dirty fluid along a first direction and the downstream outlet discharges clean fluid along a second direction substantially not parallel to the first direction. The filter element defines an angle between the inlet and outlet flow, allowing large dust particles to move out of the media pack due to inertia.

Abstract: A system and method for monitoring the negative impact of a filtration system on the fuel economy of an internal combustion engine. A filter monitoring controller receives engine operating parameters of the internal combustion engine. The filter monitoring controller determines an amount of power generated by the internal combustion engine based at least in part on the engine operating parameters. The filter monitoring controller determines a filter hydraulic power consumption of a filtration system providing a fluid to the internal combustion engine. The filter monitoring controller determines a fuel economy impact of the filtration system on the internal combustion engine based at least in part on the filter hydraulic power consumption of the filtration system. The filter monitoring controller compares the fuel economy impact of the filtration system to a threshold fuel economy impact to determine whether a filter element of the filtration system requires servicing.
