However, the translation module may attempt to hide the application module's use of this local address. Thus, the translation module may translate the source address of packets sent by the application module from the local IP address to a different IP address that has been assigned to the WCD by a Proxy Mobile IP (PMIP) gateway.

A wireless communication device integrated with a vehicle operates in a reduced-registration mode while the vehicle ignition is off. In the reduced-registration mode, the wireless communication device periodically determines, based at least on vehicle control system data such as odometer data or wheel-rotation data, whether the vehicle has moved at least a threshold extent, and if so the wireless communication device engages in air interface registration. The arrangement helps to conserve vehicle battery power while the ignition is off, while keeping a serving radio access network apprised when the vehicle has been moved sufficiently, so that the network can more readily route messages such as telematics commands to the vehicle.

Methods and systems for supporting simple Internet Protocol (IP) with address translation in a proxy mobile IP (PMIP) gateway are presented. A PMIP gateway may be operable to serve wireless communication devices (WCDs) via either a PMIP mode or a simple IP with address translation mode. While the PMIP gateway is serving a given WCD in the simple IP with address translation mode, the PMIP gateway may determine that the given WCD is likely to be handed off to a network that requires the PMIP mode or a mobile IP mode. In response to making this determination, the PMIP gateway may switch to serve the given WCD with the PMIP mode.

It is desirable for the network to provide an obscured, or approximate, location to protect the privacy of the client. The network queries the client for its PN list. From the PN list, the network determines the active cell sectors and active cell towers. The network determines all cell sectors associated with the active cell towers, and excludes the sectors that encompass the client. From the non-excluded sectors, a cell sector is randomly selected. A geographic location is randomly selected from within the cell sector. A region that encompasses the geographic location is determined, and an identifier associated with the region, such as a ZIP code, is sent to the service. The exact location of the client cannot be determined from the regional identifier.
