摘要： An instrument for removing tissue from a bone to create a cavity consists of an approximately spherical body having cutting formations in its external surface for cutting a bone. The body has a connector by which it can be connected to a drive by which it can be rotated about an axis, and a recess at the pole, opposite the connector. When the instrument is applied to the surface of a bone and is rotated about its axis, bone is cut as a result of the action of the formations against the bone, and a circular region of bone adjacent to the polar recess in the body remains generally intact.

摘要： An implant assembly having an articulating surface and an axial cavity arranged to receive an end of a bone, the axial cavity being generally circular in cross section in a plane normal to the axis of the implant, and including a spacing element detachable from the implant. At least a portion of the interior surface of the cavity is roughened and is arranged to abrade bone when the end of the bone is received in the cavity. The spacing element is arranged to prevent the implant from fully seating on the end of the bone such that the implant and the end of the bone are in a predetermined spaced apart arrangement.

摘要： A support structure implant for location within a bone cavity to support the bone which defines the cavity is formed from wires by braiding in a machine direction from a first end of the structure towards an opposite second end. The wires are formed into loops at the first end of the structure so that two lengths of wire extend away from each loop and a reformed into the braid. Each of the wires which is formed into the braid is held at the second end of the structure in a clamp. The clamp is provided by a support ring and a clamp ring which is formed from a shape memory alloy which can shrink to clamp the wires against the support ring when heated.

摘要： A method of aligning an alignment guide relative to a reamed acetabulum of a patient is provided. The method includes the step of manipulating an alignment guide comprising a shaft having a longitudinal axis and a guide arm having a first portion, a second portion and a third portion, the first portion attached to the shaft and configured to be rotatable about a first axis substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, the second portion extending from the first portion at a first predetermined angle along a second axis, and the third portion extending from the second portion at a second predetermined angle. The guide arm is rotated about the first axis relative to the shaft. A cup or trial is attached to the distal end of the shaft and positioned to contact the reamed acetabulum. The third portion of the guide arm is then oriented with respect to the long axis of the patient and the surface of the table on which the patient is positioned.
