摘要: A cutting tool that can cut concentric ringed features (e.g. protruding ridges or intruding grooves) onto a weld face of an electrical resistance welding electrode is disclosed. The cutting tool includes a cutter blade that can be rotated about the electrode weld face. The cutter blade has at least one cutting surface configured to cut the concentric ringed features onto the weld face when the cutting surface is rotated relative to the weld face while engaged therewith.

摘要: A method is provided for forming a precursor layer of aluminum oxide on a cold-rolled ferritic stainless steel substrate having an aluminum content of less than five weight percent, and more preferably as low as 1.5 weight percent, by exposing the stainless steel to a hydrogen atmosphere containing controlled quantities of water vapor to provide a controlled hydrogen-to-water vapor ratio of less than about 1400. The aluminum can be provided either as a constituent of the ferritic stainless steel chemistry, or it can be provided as a coating on a ferritic stainless steel which contains essentially no aluminum itself. The resulting oxidation environment is extremely oxygen-poor, having a partial pressure of oxygen between about 2.7.times.10.sup.-23 and 1.9.times.10.sup.-18 atmospheres. In addition, the environment has a relatively high water vapor content of up to about 10,000 ppm. The water vapor serves to replenish the environment's oxygen content, through disassociation of the water vapor, as the oxygen becomes depleted as a result of oxidation of the aluminum in the stainless steel. The above process serves as a pretreatment of the ferritic stainless steel's surface, enabling a subsequent growth of a fully developed layer of aluminum oxide whiskers that provides a surface which promotes adhesion of a catalytically active material to the stainless steel substrate.

摘要: A peeling billet of the type for producing a thin metal foil by a metal peeling process and composed of an aluminum-containing ferritic stainless steel, that is, iron-chromium-aluminum alloy, is manufactured from cast alloy. A casting is forged at an elevated temperature in a manner sufficient to work the metal by an amount equivalent to forging along an axis to produce at least a 50 percent reduction in dimension. The forged billet is annealed at a temperature at least 80 degrees greater than the forging temperature, but not greater than 1100.degree. C., to recrystallize the metal to produce a refined grain microstructure conducive to peeling.

摘要: Aluminum-base alloy workpieces have surfaces with films of aluminum oxide which inhibit good contact with weld faces of resistance spot weld electrodes and the faying surfaces of, for example, sheet workpieces stacked for welding. Sometimes, the surfaces of the sheets also are coated with an adhesive or a sealer which further complicates welding. But in accordance with this invention, weld faces of opposing, round, copper welding electrodes are pressed against opposite outside surfaces of the sheets at a spot weld site and weld current is applied to the electrodes in accordance with a three-stage weld schedule to better form each weld. The weld schedule comprises a Conditioning stage (stage 1), a weld nugget Shaping stage (stage 2), and a weld nugget Sizing stage (stage 3).

摘要: A welding apparatus for an induction motor includes a fixture operable to support a rotor and rotate the rotor about an axis of rotation of the motor, and a welding head supported adjacent the fixture and operable to weld conductor bars located about the surface of the rotor to the first shorting ring when the fixture supports the rotor. A controller controls the fixture to selectively rotate the rotor. The controller moves the welding head, the fixture, or both, so that the welding head is in a welding position, and causes the welding head to weld the conductor bars to the first shorting ring while remaining in the welding position, with the rotor rotating to create a substantially circular weld path along the first shorting ring. In some embodiments, the conductor bars are welded to both shorting rings simultaneously. A method of welding an induction motor is also provided.

摘要: In aluminum-containing stainless steel foil, the presence of magnesium impurity in an amount greater than about 0.002 weight percent has been found to inhibit formation of a preferred oxide surface layer characterized by multitudinous oxide whiskers of a type suitable for tightly bonding an applied coating. A method for purifying magnesium-contaminated foil comprises heating the foil to selectively vaporize the magnesium while avoiding incipient melting of the base alloy, preferably between about 1000.degree. C. and 1150.degree. C. The magnesium vapors escape into a suitable ambient phase such as a vacuum or a dry hydrogen gas. Thereafter, the foil is oxidized under conditions effective to produce the desired whiskers. A preferred steel is composed of an iron-base alloy comprising about 15 to 25 weight percent chromium and 3 to 6 weight percent aluminum, and optionally may contain cerium or yttrium in an amount effective to promote oxide adherence.

摘要: A method is disclosed for using welding electrodes with a spherically-domed welding face having concentric contoured features formed into the face for better contact with workpiece surfaces. The concentric contoured features may be initially formed by rotating a cutting tool with a contoured cutting edge, the cutting edge being in engagement with the electrode face. A similar practice may be followed to re-create the weld face surface geometry if it becomes eroded or malformed during welding use. A suitable tool may have a blade-like geometry, with a mounting portion for supporting and positioning the tool in a rotating holder and a cutting edge. The cutting edge may have a contour complementary to that of the weld face and extend at least from the center of the weld face to at least the radial extent of the concentric contoured features.
