摘要: Pigment dispersants for use in coating compositions wherein the dispersant is the polymerization product of (i) an alkyl methacrylate having from 3 to 8 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, (ii) a hardening monomer selected from the group consisting of a styrene, methyl methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate and mixtures thereof, (iii) an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, itaconic acid, crotonic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid and mixtures thereof or a monomer having a double bond alpha-beta to a carbonyl group and which provides carboxyl functionality when reacted with water, alcohol, amine or anhydride, (iv) a monomer having a double bond alpha-beta to a carbonyl group and at least one hydroxyl group or a monomer which provides such groups when further reacted with an acid or an epoxide, and (v) a compound providing an amine or amine salt functional moiety. The dispersants are useful for dispersing pigments in coating compositions containing a wide variety of film-forming resins.

摘要: A method of cationic electrodeposition on an electroconductive substrate is disclosed. The method of the invention employs as the electrocoating vehicle an aqueous dispersion of a quaternary ammonium carbonate-containing resin. Electrodeposition of the resin is accomplished without generating harmful acid from the counter ion. The carbonate counter ion is continuously evolved from the electrodeposition bath at the anode as carbon dioxide.The quaternary ammonium carbonate-containing polymers are also useful as feed resins for controlling the pH of aqueous dispersions of acidified cationic resins used in electrodeposition. Upon electrodeposition, these resins generate acid which can build up to undesirable levels in the electrodeposition bath. The quaternary ammonium carbonate-containing polymers are relatively basic and when fed into the bath react with the acid to form the corresponding quaternary ammonium salt of the acid releasing carbon dioxide. This controls the pH of the bath and provides additional cationic resin for electrodeposition.Utilizing the polymeric quaternary ammonium carbonates in this manner minimizes the need for controlling acid build-up in the electrodeposition bath by conventional techniques such as by treating the bath with ultrafiltration or electrodialysis.

摘要: Quaternary ammonium hydroxide-containing polymers and their use in cationic electrodeposition are disclosed. The quaternary ammonium hydroxide-containing polymers are particularly useful as feed resins for controlling the pH of aqueous dispersions of acidified cationic resins used in electrodeposition. Upon electrodeposition, such resins generate acid which can build up to undesirable levels in the electrodeposition bath. The quaternary ammonium hydroxide-containing polymers are strong bases and when fed into the bath react with the acid to form the corresponding quaternary ammonium salt. This controls the pH of the bath at acceptable levels and provides additional cationic resin for electrodeposition. Utilizing the invention in this manner minimizes the need for controlling acid build-up in the electrodeposition bath by conventional techniques such as by treating the bath with ultrafiltration or electrodialysis.The quaternary ammonium hydroxide-containing polymers are also useful as electrodeposition resins themselves in that they electrodeposit without generating acid counter ion.

摘要: Water-based coating compositions for use as internal sanitary liners for metal containers containing beer, carbonated and noncarbonated soft drinks, and fruit juices consist essentially of aqueous dispersions of amine-solubilized interpolymers, said interpolymers being formed from substituted carboxylic acid amide units; ethylenically unsaturated acid units; hardening units from monomers such as styrene, vinyl toluene or alkyl methacrylates having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and flexibilizing units from certain alkyl acrylates or methacrylates. The interpolymers are solubilized by neutralizing the acid units of the interpolymer with monomeric amines. In order to produce a stable composition, the amount of amine utilized in neutralizing the acid groups of the interpolymer should be sufficient to produce at least 0.200 milliequivalents of salt per gram of resin solids. These compositions provide containers with cured liners which do not impart undesirable turbidity or taste characteristics to the beer, soft drink, or fruit juices packaged therein.
