The present invention provides a coating additive copolymer comprising, as copolymerized units, by dry weight based on total dry weight of the copolymer, from 20% to 60%, at least one acetoacetoxy or acetoacetamide functional ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and from 40% to 80% at least one water soluble ethylenically unsaturated monomer. It further provides a coating formulation comprising higher than 0.04% by dry weight based on total dry weight of the coating formulation, the acetoacetoxy or acetoacetamide functional ethylenically unsaturated monomer.

The invention provides monolayer films excellent in hydrophilicity and transparency which include a crosslinked resin having a surface enriched with hydrophilic groups, and materials which exhibit excellent properties such as hydrophilicity, antifogging properties and antifouling properties by virtue of having the above monolayer films. A monolayer film is fabricated which includes a crosslinked resin obtained by polymerizing a composition including a compound (I) having an anionic hydrophilic group and a functional group with a polymerizable carbon-carbon double bond, and a compound (II) having three or more hydroxyl groups and three or more functional groups with a polymerizable carbon-carbon double bond, the monolayer film having a gradient (Sa/Da) of not less than 1.1 wherein Sa is the surface concentration of the anionic hydrophilic groups in the monolayer film, and Da is the deep concentration of the hydrophilic groups at ½ of the thickness of the monolayer film.

The present invention relates to an imaged article comprising a substrate having a primed surface layer. The primed surface layer is comprised of a base polymer having a solubility parameter, molecular weight (Mw) and glass transition temperature within a specified range. The presence of the primer improves the overall image quality by improving at least one property including ink uptake, dot gain, color density and/or ink adhesion. Preferred primer compositions are soluble at least in part in the ink composition resulting in an increase in ink layer thickness that further improves the durability and/or day/night color balance. A variety of substrates may be primed including various sheeting for traffic control signage and commercial graphic films for advertising and promotional displays.

The present invention is directed to a low VOC ultra high solids thermosetting coating composition. A polymeric component of the composition includes a low molecular weight polymer polymerized from a monomer mixture containing less than 45 percent by weight of at least one active hydrogen containing monomer. The polymerization takes place in the presence of a reactive diluent. By including the reactive diluent in the polymeric component of the composition, the amount of solvent used in the composition can be substantially reduced, while still providing a pot mix of the composition with a viscosity sufficient to permit efficient coating application. The coatings from the composition are durable; glossy; impact and solvent resistant; and adherent to a wide variety of substrates, such as automobile bumpers, road surfaces and office equipment. The surface of these coatings when subjected to scuffing or surface marring action can be substantially restored to its original condition by simply buffing or polishing the marred or scuffed surface. The invention is also directed to include a combination of chemicals in the thermosetting composition containing an isocyanate cross linking component. Such a combination simultaneously increases the pot life of the pot mix while decreasing the drying time of a coating from the pot mix at ambient temperature over a wide variety of substrate surfaces.
