Novel acid-functional poly(alkylene carbonate) polyahls and their salts having surfactant activities are disclosed. These polyahls have, on the average, at least about 0.05 and up to about and including one hydrophilic terminus per molecule and can be produced by the reaction of a random non-ionic poly(alkylene carbonate) polyahl obtained by reacting a monofunctional alcohol, mercaptan, carboxylic acid, primary or secondary amine, alkyl substituted phenol or alkoxylates thereof with an alkylene carbonate and/or an alkylene oxide and/or carbon dioxide and/or a poly(alkylene carbonate) polyahl, and admixing a compound capable of adding an acidic end group thereto. Novel anionic poly(alkylene carbonate) polyahls are also disclosed. Surfactant compositions comprising the acid-functional polyahls of the invention and other non-ionic surfactants are also disclosed. Moreover, surfactant compositions comprising the novel acid-functional polyahls and other anionic surfactants are also disclosed.

The invention is a process for increasing the molecular weight of a poly(alkylene carbonate) polyahl which comprises exposing the poly(alkylene carbonate) polyahl to elevated temperatures at which dialkylene glycol or initiator segments, wherein the initiator has about the same or greater volatility as the dialkylene glycol segment, are abstracted from the poly(alkylene carbonate), polyahl, at a pressure wherein the dialkylene glycol or initiator is volatile, and removing the volatile dialkylene glycol initiator from the mass of the poly(alkylene carbonate) polyahl, under conditions such that the molecular weight of the poly(alkylene carbonate) polyahl is increased.

A.sup..crclbar. ].sub.n, wherein X is an n-valent hydrophobic radical derived by the removal of n-atoms of active hydrogen from an organic compound; m is one or more; R is a divalent aromatic hydrocarbon radical of from 6 to about 14 carbon atoms, the chain-length of which may be interrupted by oxygen or sulfur atoms; R' is hydrogen or methyl and is methyl only when R is m- or p-phenylene; Q.sup..sym. is a quaternized atom of nitrogen or phosphorus or a tertiary atom of sulfur; A.sup..crclbar. is a compatible anion; and n is from 1 to 5. The following compound is an example C.sub.9 H.sub.19 --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --O--CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O--.sub.15 CH.sub.2 --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --CH.sub.2 --S.sup..sym. --CH.sub.3).sub.2 Cl.sup..crclbar.. The method involves the steps of preparing a selected internal surface of a high melting point metal tubing for sealing to a glass tubing; inserting a portion of the glass tubing into the prepared portion of the metal tubing, the glass tubing having an outer diameter substantially the same as the inner diameter of the metal tubing; sealing the inserted glass tubing to the internal surface of the metal tubing; drawing the glass tubing under a magnifying device to reduce the entire interior diameter thereof to substantially two microns; and breaking away an end portion of the drawn glass tubing.

This invention concerns sulfur-containing hydroxy pyrones corresponding to the formula ##SPC1##Wherein M is H or alkali metal, R is methyl, R' is hydrogen, alkyl, phenyl, halophenyl, nitrophenyl, loweralkylphenyl, benzyl, phenethyl, naphthylmethyl, halobenzyl, loweralkylbenzyl, nitrobenzyl, propargyl, allyl, cyclohexyl loweralkyl, (loweralkylthio)-loweralkyl or adamantyl and n is 0 to 2. The compounds are prepared by reacting the mono-alkali metal salt of 4-hydroxy-6-methyl-2-pyrone with an appropriate thiosulfonate, advantageously in the presence of an organic solvent. The compounds have utility as plant growth stunters and as antimicrobial agents.
