    摘要: A surface-modified article is formed of an elastomeric matrix, such as a glove shape, and a plurality of fine silica particles affixed to at least a portion of the surface of the matrix, the outside surface in the case of the glove. The fine silica particles increase the coefficient of friction of the article surface. The fine silica particles may also be made electrically conductive, so that static charge at the surface of the article is dissipated. The silica particles are applied by mixing them into a coating composition, applying the coating composition to the surface of a mold, and solidifying a flowable elastomeric composition against the coated surface. The coating composition may include a coagulant or a parting agent.

    摘要: A method of inserting z-axis reinforcing fibers into a multi-layer composite laminate. Layers of material made up of z-axis fiber and y-axis fibers are automatically transported into a z-fiber deposition machine having a housing with upper and lower surfaces. Z-axis apertures are formed in the respective upper and lower surfaces. An elongated solid rod having a tapered front tip is aligned in close proximity to the aperture in the bottom surface. The rod is first rotated by a motor and then actuated upwardly completely through the thickness of the layer of x-y material by an actuator. A first hollow tube having a z-axis is axially aligned with the aperture in the top surface and a fiber bundle is threaded downwardly through a first hollow tube to a position adjacent its bottom end. The z-fiber deposition machine has structure to feed a predetermined length of the fiber bundle downwardly through the first hollow tube so that it follows the pathway in the x-y material formed by the rod which is now withdrawn downwardly through the aperture in the bottom wall. The z-axis fiber is thus deposited into the x-y material. The top end of the z-axis fiber is then severed and the x-y material is then advanced a predetermined distance to complete the cycle and is, thus, set to be repeated.

    摘要: A structure derives its structural strength and integrity entirely from interlocked pultruded composite members. The disclosed techniques can be used in a wide variety of applications including replacement for steel frame structures and is especially useful where the electrical properties of steel are undesirable, such as in high voltage transmission towers. Two types of pultrusions are used as structural members to build the entire structure. Lock-in butt joints between all members are made by inserting the compressed ends of the resilient bifurcations of the crossmembers into openings in the receiving member, where they expand to lock in place and are blocked against subsequent compression by inserts. Channels spanning the entire column lengths permit insertion of a crossmember anywhere along the channel where there is an access opening. Cruciform crossmember supports used throughout are made by passing one member through an expandible slit in the other member until corresponding notches interlock, with the joints so created allowing a few degrees of scissoring between the members to facilitate engagement of the crossmembers in the column channels through the smallest window possible.

    摘要: A column and beam joint system is used to make possible the construction of a large tower such as an electrical transmission tower, which has at least three and probably four corner legs or columns which are interconnected and supported by a lattice structure of cross members. The columns have specialized channels extending substantially their full lengths and the cross members have specialized locking ends which lock into retaining structure defined in the channels, permitting braces to be inserted and locked in place at any selected point along the channel. A technique for connecting a cross member brace between a column and another cross member is also disclosed. All of the principle parts of the tower are pultruded composites which are either used in their longitudinally extended form or sectioned as required by the application. The entire tower can thus be formed of pultruded composites without the use of metal fasteners or connecting structure, enabling the tower to be made smaller and more compact, thus reducing induced EMF around the base of the tower.

The interlocking and connecting of cubic cells provides a rigid structure capable of accepting loads in any direction and allowing the rack to be mounted in any orientation, with single point wall mounting possible wherein the rack can withstand full loading with no distortion. The modular cell configuration is adapted to the construction of lattice beams and other arrangements besides wine racks.
