摘要: A phase plate comprises, as a birefringent layer, a film obtained by stretching and orienting a sheet of a thermoplastic saturated norbornene resin, which has been formed by melt forming. The phase plate of the invention is such that the birefringent layer is optically even at the whole surface, and such optical evenness remains constant even by changes of temperature, humidity and/or the like. The phase plate of the invention can be used in parts for polarization microscopes, parts for liquid crystal displays, etc., and is particularly suitable for use in a phase plate for liquid crystal displays.

摘要: A polymer composition including a thermoplastic norbornene polymer which preferably has a number average molecular weight of 10,00-200,000 as determined by gel permeation chromatography in toluene solvent and calculated as styrene and a content of norbornene polymer components having a number average molecular weight of 2,000 or less of 1% by weight or less, and a compounding ingredient, such as a rubber-like polymer, wherein the compounding ingredient is preferably dispersed in the form of microdomains in the norbornene polymer; and medical implements and optical naturals formed essentially of the composition.

摘要: The present invention discloses an alkylidenenorbornene polymer comprising as the essential constituent at least one kind of the structural unit represented by the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 denotes an alkyl group of 1-4 carbon atoms and R.sub.2 denotes a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group of 1-5 carbon atoms, and a process for producing the same.According to the present invention, an alkylidenenorbornene polymer is obtained which is excellent in light resistance, transparency, heat resistance and moisture resistance and is useful as an optical polymeric material.

摘要: A molding material suitable as an optical material and an optical recording medium formed of the molding material are disclosed. The molding material comprises a hydrogenated product of a polymer formed by ring-opening polymerization of a norbornene-type monomer, the hydrogenated product having a number average molecular weight (Mn) of 20,000 to 50,000, a weight average molecular weight (Mw) of 40,000 to 80,000 and a molecular distribution (Mw/Mn) of not more than 2.5 and having a volatile content of not more than 0.3% by weight.

摘要: A process for producing a polymer by ring-opening polymerization of a norbornene-type monomer, which comprises starting the ring-opening polymerization in the presence of a Ziegler-type catalyst consisting essentially of an organometallic compound of a metal belonging to the groups I to III of the periodic table and titanium tetrahalide, carrying out the ring-opening polymerization until the norbornene-type monomer shows a conversion ratio of not less than 60%, and then adding a tungsten and/or molybdenum-based metathesis catalyst to the polymerization reaction system to continue the ring-opening polymerization.
