    摘要: In a communications system having an analog channel configured to convey a data signal from a transmitter to a receiver, a method of mitigating narrow-band impairment imposed by the analog channel on the data signal within a bounded spectral region of a spectrum of the data signal. A transmitter digital signal processor (Tx DSP) applying a first adaptation function to the data signal prior to transmitting the data signal through the analog channel. A receiver digital signal processor (Rx DSP) applying a second adaptation function to the data signal received through the analog channel. The first and second adaptation functions are selected to cooperatively mitigate effects of the narrow-band impairment imposed by the analog channel.

    摘要: In a coherent receiver of an optical communication system, a method of processing a detected symbol estimate to determine a most likely value of a corresponding transmitted data word, the transmitted data word comprising one or more data bits encoded in a transmitter using a predetermined constellation of at least two symbols. A set of two or more virtual constellation points are define in a decision region corresponding to a possible value of the data word. The detected symbol estimate is processed to find a most likely virtual constellation point given the detected symbol estimate. The most likely value of the corresponding transmitted data word is determined based on the most likely virtual constellation point.

Two or more SYNC bursts, having a known symbol sequence and periodicity, are processed to derive an estimate of a frequency offset Δf between a transmit laser and a Local Oscillator (LO) of the receiver. A phase rotation κ(n) is computed based on the estimate of the frequency offset Δf, and applied to a plurality of data symbol estimates to generate corresponding rotated symbol estimates. The rotated symbol estimates are then filtered to generate corresponding decision values of each data symbol.

    摘要: A method of testing a dual-polarization optical transmitter comprising a pair of polarization transmitters for respectively generating first and second polarization signals, and a polarization combiner for generating an optical signal composed of the first and second polarization signals with respective orthogonal polarization vectors. Each of the polarization transmitters is controlled to transmit respective polarization optical signals having predetermined characteristics. An output of the dual-polarization optical transmitter is tapped to obtain a first tap signal representative of the first polarization signal, and a second tap signal representative of the second polarization signal. A relative angle between respective polarization vectors of the tap signals is controlled, and the first and second tap signals combined to generate a combined light. A power level of the combined light is detected, and processed to obtain information about the performance of the dual polarization transmitter.

    摘要: Nonlinearity-induced signal distortions are compensated by processing an input communications signal, in the electrical domain prior to Electrical-to-optical conversion and transmission through an optical link of a communications system. According to the invention, a compensation operator is determined that substantially mitigates the nonlinearity-induced signal distortions imparted to an optical signal traversing the communications system. The input communications signal is then input to the compensation operator to generate a predistorted electrical signal. This predistorted electrical signal is then used to modulate an optical source to generate a corresponding predistorted optical signal for transmission through the optical communications system. With this arrangement, arbitrary nonlinearity-induced signal distortions imparted by the optical link can be compensated in such a manner that a comparatively undistorted optical signal is obtained at the receiving end of the optical link.

    摘要: A method of a conveying data through an optical communications system. An optical signal is received through the optical communication system, the optical signal comprising data symbols and SYNC bursts, each SYNC burst having a predetermined symbol sequence. The received optical signal is oversampled to generate a multi-bit sample stream. The sample stream is partitioned into blocks of contiguous samples, wherein each block of samples partially overlaps at least one other block of samples and encompasses at least one SYNC burst and a plurality of data symbols. Each block of samples is independently processed to detect a value of each data symbol.

    摘要: Optical dispersion imposed on a communications signal conveyed through an optical communications system is compensated by modulating the communications signal in the electrical domain. A compensation function is determined that substantially mitigates the chromatic dispersion. The communications signal is then modulated in the electrical domain using the compensation function. Electrical domain compensation can be implemented in either the transmitter or the receiver end of the communications system. In preferred embodiments, compensation is implemented in the transmitter, using a look-up-table and digital-to-analog converter to generate an electrical predistorted signal. The electrical predistorted signal is then used to modulate an optical source to generate a corresponding predistorted optical signal for transmission through the optical communications system.
