    摘要: In a direct-detection receiver having an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for sampling a received optical signal and a sequence estimator for recovering data symbols from a multi-bit sample stream generated by the ADC, a method of acquiring a channel lock condition of a clock recovery block of the receiver. A plurality of sets of channel statistics are provided. Each set of channel statistics optimizes performance of the sequence estimator for a respective predetermined combination of channel chromatic dispersion and polarization mode dispersion. At least one set of channel statistics will, when installed in the sequence estimator, yield symbol estimates having residual distortions that are within an acquisition range of the clock recovery block. During start-up of the receiver, one of the sets of channel statistics is selected and installed in the Sequence Estimator. If a channel lock condition is not detected within a predetermined time interval, the step of selecting one of the sets of channel statistics and installing the selected set of channel statistics in the Sequence Estimator is repeated until a channel lock condition is detected.

A fixed length container of the optical communications network is defined, which includes an overhead and a payload. A stuffing ratio (α) is based on a line rate of the input signal and a data rate of the container. A number (NFS) of fixed stuffs is computed based on the stuffing ratio (α). The input signal and NFS fixed stuffs are inserted into the payload of the container, and the computed number NFS stored in the container's overhead.

    摘要: Described are an optical communications system and a method that allow for compensation of chromatic dispersion and polarization mode dispersion imparted to a communications signal propagating through an optical link. The system is based on a cost-effective optical transport architecture that accommodates baud rates exceeding 15 Gbaud and eliminates the need for costly optical dispersion compensators. Compensation for polarization mode dispersion is performed at the receiver using nonlinear processing. Advantageously, direct detection modulation using inexpensive electro-optic system components can be used in place of more costly and complex coherent and differential modulation formats. Digital filtering can be performed at the transmitter and the input signal can be inverted based on the nonlinearity of the transmitter electro-optic components. Consequently, the bandwidth and linearity requirements for the transmitter electro-optic components are relaxed, and cost reductions are realized.

    摘要: A suppressed carrier optical communications signal is generated by driving (biasing) an optical modulator capable of complex modulation of an optical carrier signal to a bias point near a zero-crossing point of the modulator's E-field response. A complex input signal is then used to drive excursions of the E-field response to impress the input signal onto the optical carrier. The resulting lightwave emerging from the complex modulator exhibits an optical spectrum characterized by a pair of sidebands and a strongly suppressed carrier. Bias control of the complex modulator is implemented on the basis of the optical power detected at the output of the complex modulator. This enables the optical modulator to be treated as a “black box”, in that calculation of the bias signals does not relay on knowledge of the precise performance characteristics of the modulator.

    摘要: An optical signal occupying one or more wavelengths. An optical data signal on each wavelength is modulated with a respective overhead (dither) signal, resulting in a respective dithered optical signal. The amplitude of a particular overhead signal used to modulate the corresponding optical data signal is chosen so that the RMS value of the overhead signal in the dithered optical signal is proportional to the average intensity of the optical data signal. The instantaneous frequency of each overhead signal is time-varying and each possible frequency belongs to a distinct set of frequencies which are all harmonically related to a fundamental frequency. The distinctness of each set of frequencies allows each overhead signal to be uniquely isolated from an aggregate overhead signal. The harmonic relationship among the frequencies allows improved accuracy of RMS detection at a receiver as well as reduced computational complexity, as each possible frequency for each overhead signal can be made to fall at the center of one of the frequency bins of a single FFT of reasonable size performed at a receiver. Methods and systems for generating and detecting such signals are disclosed.
