Abstract: An optical fiber endcap device may include an input facet spliced onto an input fiber and an output end through which counterpropagating light enters the optical fiber endcap device. The optical fiber endcap device further includes a plurality of angled facets that are arranged at respective angles relative to an axis of the optical fiber endcap device to reflect at least a portion of the counterpropagating light back through the output end of the optical fiber endcap device.

Abstract: An optical fiber may comprise a core doped with one or more active ions to guide signal light from an input end of the optical fiber to an output end of the optical fiber, a cladding surrounding the core to guide pump light from the input end of the optical fiber to the output end of the optical fiber, and one or more inserts formed in the cladding surrounding the core. Each of the one or more inserts may have a geometry (e.g., a cross-sectional size, a helical pitch, and/or the like) that varies along a longitudinal length of the optical fiber, which may cause an absorption of the pump light to be modulated along the longitudinal length of the optical fiber.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing a side-coupling structure, associated with coupling an aiming beam from an aiming beam fiber into a laser beam fiber, may include removing a coating from a section of the laser beam fiber and removing a coating from a section of the aiming beam fiber. The method may further include bringing the section of the aiming beam fiber in physical contact with the section of the laser beam fiber in order to create the side-coupling structure. The method may further include recoating the section of the laser beam fiber and the section of the aiming beam fiber in order to coat the side-coupling structure.

Abstract: A cladding light stripper may include a double-clad optical fiber having a core for guiding signal light, an inner cladding surrounding the core, and an outer cladding surrounding the inner cladding. The optical fiber may include a stripped portion forming an exposed section. The exposed section may include a plurality of spirally-arranged transversal notches disposed along the optical fiber to enable light to escape the inner cladding upon impinging on the plurality of notches. A circumferential segment of the optical fiber may include a single notch of the plurality of notches. Each of the plurality of notches may have a depth of only a partial distance to the core.

Abstract: An optical delivery waveguide for a material laser processing system includes a small lens at an output end of the delivery waveguide, transforming laser beam divergence inside the waveguide into a spot size after the lens. By varying the input convergence angle and/or launch angle of the laser beam launched into the waveguide, the output spot size can be continuously varied, thus enabling a continuous and real-time laser spot size adjustment on the workpiece, without having to replace the delivery waveguide or a process head. A divergence of the laser beam can also be adjusted dynamically and in concert with the spot size.

Abstract: A beam combiner may include source elements, each configured to output a beam of light locked at a center wavelength different from center wavelengths of other source elements. The beam combiner may include a dispersive element configured to combine the beams of light into a combined beam, and a beam separator configured to separate the combined beam into an output beam and a locking beam. The beam combiner may include a spatial filter configured to prevent crosstalk within the locking beam, and to redirect the locking beam to the source elements. The dispersive element may be configured to disperse the locking beam into constituent wavelength beams. Each constituent wavelength beam may be directed to a respective one of the source elements for locking that source element at its center wavelength, and may correspond in wavelength to the center wavelength of the respective source element.
