The present invention provides a computer system comprising hosts, first and second file servers connected to the hosts, and a storage system connected to the first and second file servers. The second file server determines that a file as a backup object is managed by the first file server, and notifies the first file server of an instruction of backup. In response to this instruction, the first server sends the second file server an identifier of a storage device that stores duplicate data of the file in question. Based on the received identifier, the second file server sets a path to that storage device, and obtains the backup data from that storage device.

The write I/O operations made to the storage system are observed for a certain period of time. Based on the observations an estimate of the size of the storage space required to preserve the snapshot data can be computed. The data storage subsystem has a plurality of memory units and a control unit for controlling the plurality of memory units. The control unit forms a paired state of a first memory unit storing data for use by the first computer and a second memory unit, the paired state being so controlled as to match the contents of the first memory unit and those of the second memory unit. When data used by the first computer are to be used by the second computer, the control unit releases the paired state between the first memory unit and the second memory unit to stop updating of the first memory unit to be reflected in the second memory unit. After that, the control unit re-maps a third memory unit used by the second computer and the second memory unit with each other, and so performs control that the access by the second computer to the third memory unit be made to the second memory unit.

The first and second setting volumes are provided in the first and second storage subsystems, respectively. The second storage volume is presented to the host, so that the host may access the first data stored in the second storage volume via a communication network.
