Abstract: A device includes a polymer stabilized blue phase liquid crystal (“PS-BPLC”) layer. The device also includes an alignment structure coupled with the PS-BPLC layer. LC molecules disposed in contact with the alignment structure are configured to have a spatially varying in-plane orientation pattern that is at least partially defined by the alignment structure. The PS-BPLC layer is configured to forwardly deflect a polarized light having a predetermined handedness, and transmit a polarized light having a handedness that is orthogonal to the predetermined handedness.

Abstract: A display system includes a source of unpolarized image light, and a stack of polarization-selective optical elements operable to switchably convert the unpolarized image light into two orthogonally polarized light beams, each of which being switchable in at least one beam characteristic. An output polarizer selects one of the two orthogonally polarized light beams for providing to a user. Abstract: A display device includes a directional illuminator providing a light beam, a display panel downstream of a directional illuminator, for receiving and spatially modulating the light beam, and a beam redirecting module downstream of the display panel, for variably redirecting the spatially modulated light beam. Abstract: A head-mounted device (HMD) contains a display, an optics block, a redirection structure, and an eye tracking system. The display is configured to emit image light and provide it to an eye of a user. The optics block is configured to direct the emitted light in order to allow it to reach the eye. The eye tracking system contains a camera, an illumination source, and a controller. The camera is configured to capture image data using infrared light reflected from the eye. The controller is configured to use this image data to determine eye tracking information. The illumination source is configured to illuminate the eye with infrared light for the purpose of taking eye tracking measurements. The redirection structure is configured to direct infrared light reflected from the eye to the eye tracking system. In multiple embodiments, redirection structures may comprise prism arrays, lenses, liquid crystal layers, or grating structures.

Abstract: A device includes a light source configured to generate an image light. The device also includes a lens assembly coupled with the light source. The lens assembly includes a mirror configured to transmit a first portion of the image light and reflect a second portion of the image light. The lens assembly also includes a reflective polarizer including a birefringent medium with a chirality and configured to substantially reflect the first portion of the image light output from the mirror as a polarized light having a predetermined handedness toward the mirror. The lens assembly further includes a lens disposed between the mirror and the reflective polarizer and configured to provide an optical power to the image light.

Abstract: A device includes a light guide. The device also includes a second in-coupling element configured to couple a second input light into the light guide. The device further includes a second out-coupling element configured to couple the second input light out of the light guide as a second output light having a second output FOV substantially non-overlapping with the first output FOV. A combination of the first and second output FOVs is larger than at least one of the first or second output FOV, and the first and second input lights have orthogonal polarizations.

Abstract: A near eye display (NED) includes multiple PBP optical elements combined with one or more C-plates to improve optical angular performance. The PBP optical elements may be configured for beam steering or for focusing light to a point. A C-plate may reduce or eliminate an undesirable polarization phase shift introduced by the PBP optical elements to angular, off-axis light. Birefringence of the PBP optical elements produces such a polarization phase shift. A C-plate provides an additional polarization phase shift that is opposite to the extra polarization phase shift by the PBP optical elements. Thus, the additional polarization phase shift by the C-plate at least partially reduces the phase shift by the PBP element.
