Abstract: A diagnostic device for use in performing refractive errors assessment and neurodegenerative disorders screening is described herein. Abstract: A display device includes a waveguide assembly comprising a waveguide configured to outcouple light out of a major surface of the waveguide to form an image in the eyes of a user. An adaptive lens assembly has a major surface facing the output surface and a waveplate lens and a switchable waveplate assembly. The switchable waveplate assembly includes quarter-wave plates on opposing sides of a switchable liquid crystal layer, and electrodes on the quarter-wave plates in the volume between the quarter-wave plates. The electrodes can selectively establish an electric field and may serve as an alignment structure for molecules of the liquid crystal layer. Portions of the adaptive lens assembly may be manufactured by roll-to-roll processing in which a substrate roll is unwound, and alignment layers and liquid crystal layers are formed on the substrate as it moves towards a second roller, to be wound on that second roller.

Abstract: Provided is a liquid crystal lens including: a first substrate; a second substrate facing the first substrate; and a liquid crystal layer held between the first substrate and the second substrate and containing liquid crystal molecules. The first substrate includes a Fresnel lens and a first electrode sequentially toward the liquid crystal layer. The second substrate includes a second electrode. The Fresnel lens includes a Fresnel-shaped part including annular lens surfaces in a concentric circle pattern and a flat part including a flat surface that extends in a radial direction of the concentric circle and intersects at least one of the annular lens surfaces. The annular lens surfaces are on a liquid crystal layer-facing surface of the Fresnel-shaped part and defines an uneven surface. The flat surface is on the liquid crystal layer-facing surface of the flat part.

Abstract: A hybrid lens is disclosed including optically coupled varifocal lens and adaptive lens. Abstract: A pair of eyeglasses may include one or more adjustable lenses. An adjustable lens may include electrically modulated optical material such as one or more liquid crystal cells having a phase profile that is adjusted using patterned electrodes. Digital-to-analog converter circuits may provide voltages to the electrodes. To save space on the lens, a smaller number of digital-to-analog converter circuits may provide voltages to a greater number of electrodes by sequentially coupling and decoupling the digital-to-analog converter circuits to different groups of electrodes, advancing from group-to-group with each clock cycle by a number of electrodes that is less than the number of digital-to-analog converter circuits. At least one of the electrodes in each group may be driven at the same voltage for two consecutive clock cycles to avoid erroneous voltages resulting from the parasitic capacitance between adjacent fingers.

Abstract: An optical device includes an electro-optical layer, having an effective local index of refraction at any given location within an active area of the electro-optical layer that is determined by a voltage waveform applied across the electro-optical layer at the location. Conductive electrodes extend over the first and second sides of the electro-optical layer. The conductive electrodes include an array of excitation electrodes including parallel stripes of a transparent conductive material having gaps between the stripes of a gap width that is less than the layer thickness of the electro-optical layer. Control circuitry is coupled to apply respective control voltage waveforms to the excitation electrodes and to modify the control voltage waveforms applied to each of the excitation electrodes concurrently and independently so as to generate a phase modulation profile in the electro-optical layer.

Abstract: An electro-active lens is presented which utilizes a surface relief structures and an electro-active material, with a change in refractive index facilitating the change in optical properties. A molded structure and a liquid crystal are used to form a diffractive lens. In addition to the classical approach of utilizing diffractive optics and multiple Fresnel zones to form a lens, an additional structure is placed between Fresnel zones in order to improve the diffraction efficiency across the visible spectrum and reduce chromatic aberration.

Abstract: A light detection and ranging (LIDAR) system includes a beam collimator, a plurality of first lenses, a plurality of tunable lenses, and one or more optical sources to generate a plurality of optical beams. Each tunable lens may be disposed adjacent a respective one of the plurality of first lenses such that the respective one of the plurality of first lenses is between the tunable lens and the beam collimator. Each of the plurality of optical beams may pass through one of the tunable lenses and one of the first lenses towards the beam collimator. Each of the plurality of tunable lenses may be separately controllable by selectively applying voltage to the tunable lens to adjust a focal length of the tunable lens to compensate for a variation in focus positions of the plurality of first lenses.
