    摘要: An improved camera shutter system which employs the principles of frustrated total internal reflection as a means for controlling transmission of light to a camera film. The shutter is comprised of at least two prism elements, one facing the other and one movable with respect to the other, to allow a common adjoining surface to move from a closed position to an open position wherein the surfaces have a space or gap therebetween. When the surfaces are open having a space or gap in between, the gap is at least just slightly larger than a wave length of light, with the result being that light is reflected rather than transmitted from one prism to the other. When the gap is closed, light is transmitted directly through one prism into the other and from there to a film positioned behind the second prism.

    摘要: A method and means of preventing heat convection in a solar pond is disclosed with the means comprising a liner element adapted to cover the sides and floor of a solar pond with the liner element having a bottom portion corresponding to the floor of the pond and side portions corresponding to the sides of the pond and a plurality of membrane elements extending between the sides of the liner element and sealably connected thereto so as to form a plurality of liquid layers with each said layer being fluidly sealed from the immediate adjacent layers and the membrane elements being of a transparent film material. The method of preventing heat convection comprises providing a body of liquid supported on a bottom support surface and having a closed periphery and upper surface, providing a plurality of closely spaced horizontal membranes in the body of liquid with the membranes being a transparent film material, sealing each membrane at the periphery of the body of liquid to prevent migration of liquid upwardly past the membranes, imposing a closed conduit through the liquid adjacent one of the lowermost membranes, and moving a fluid through the conduit whereby the fluid will absorb heat from the liquid by conduction through the conduit.An alternate embodiment of the means for preventing convection is disclosed comprising a liner element and a membrane element extending between the sides of the liner element and sealably connected to the liner element with the membrane adapted to form an upper insulating layer and a plurality of solution filled capsules adapted for dispersion within the insulating layer with the capsules and the solution being transparent.

    摘要: Methods and systems provide pulsed-power to a load utilizing high temperature superconductors (HTS) within multiple pulsed-power devices. According to embodiments described herein, each pulsed-power device includes a HTS mounted on a rotor and an armature coil mounted on a stator. The rotor is positioned to allow a magnetic field within the HTS to induce a voltage in the armature coil when the rotor is rotating and to allow a magnetic field created by passing current through the armature coil to charge the HTS. Current created from the operation of a first pulsed-power device is routed to the armature coil in a second pulsed-power device to charge the associated HTS to a higher value. Subsequently, the second pulsed-power device is operated to produce current that is used to further charge the HTS in the first pulsed-power device. This bootstrapping procedure is repeated until all HTSs are fully charged.

    摘要: A superconducting bearing having at least one permanent magnet magnetized with a vertical polarization. The lower or stator portion of the bearing includes an array of high-temperature superconducting elements which are comprised of a plurality of annular rings. An annular ring is located below each permanent magnet and an annular ring is offset horizontally from at least one of the permanent magnets. The rings are composed of individual high-temperature superconducting elements located circumferentially along the ring. By constructing the horizontally-offset high-temperature superconducting ring so that the c-axis is oriented in a radial direction, a higher levitation force can be achieved. Such an orientation will also provide substantially lower rotational drag losses in the bearing.
