A transverse conveyance apparatus for roller conveyors comprises a frame, a crosswise feeding mechanism mounted to the frame and a lift device for raising and lowering the frame. Each of rotating portions of the crosswise feeding mechanism is of a width freely movable through between two adjacent rollers of the conveyor. The lift device comprises a cylinder, lids closing opposite ends thereof, fixed shafts protruding outwards and longitudinally of the cylinder that is coaxial with said shafts capable of rotating relative to the lids, a motor built in and driving the cylinder to rotate around and relative to the shafts, a reducer built therein, and a resistance unit also built therein and increasing resistance against rotation thereof. Attachment-engaging portions are formed on the respective lids and disposed longitudinally of the cylinder to face outwards so that the portions and the cylinder rotate together. The portions have axes arranged offset with respect to axes of the shafts. The shafts are held in position in and by an immovable part, with the attachment-engaging portions being not only connected to the frame but also capable of rotating relative to the frame.

The upper blade disk has a ring gear, the lower blade disk has a sun gear, and a transmission gear is provided between the ring gear and the sun gear and meshes these gears so as to rotate the ring and sun gears in the opposite directions, thus rotating the upper and lower blade disks in the opposite directions for producing a shearing force that cuts the plants.

The instant invention is drawn to a method for manufacturing 2',3'-dideoxy-2',3'-didehydronucleoside compounds by reacting a ribonucleoside derivative wherein the hydroxyl in the 5'-position of the furanose ring of said ribonucleoside is protected by a silyl protective group, with an acid anhydride such as acetic anhydride in the presence of a catalyst such as hydrous zirconium oxide, and then subjecting the reaction product to decarboxylation. The decarboxylation can be effected by heating the reaction product. This method can be performed in a single step, and requires no reagents which are expensive or chemicals which should be handled with care. Hence, it serves to manufacture 2',3'-dideoxy-2',3'-didehydronucleosides easily at low cost.

(S)-4-hydroxymethyl-.gamma.-lactone is prepared by oxidizing dihydrolevoglucosenone with a peracid in an organic solvent. (S)-4-hydroxymethyl-.gamma.-lactone is prepared from levoglucosenone. First, levoglucosenone is catalytic hydrogenated, thereby dihydrolevoglucosenone is obtained. Next, dihydrolevoglucosenone thus obtained is oxidized with a peracid in an organic solvent, thereby (S)-4-hydroxymethyl-.gamma.-lactone is obtained. In this manner, (S)-4-hydroxymethyl-.gamma.-lactone can be obtained with high optical purity.
