The coordinate input apparatus acquires an input coordinate in accordance with a delay time required for vibration input from a vibration input pen to a vibration propagation plate to reach a vibration sensor. A controller of the apparatus drives the vibration input pen at a first drive level. A window signal generator of the apparatus generates a window signal indicating that a significant signal was detected, when the level of an envelope detected from a signal supplied from the vibration sensor exceeds a detection threshold value. In accordance with the window signal, delay times tp and tg are acquired. A level discriminator of the apparatus judges whether the level of the envelope exceeds a discrimination threshold value. If it is judged that the level exceeds the discrimination threshold value, the controller drives the vibration input pen at a second drive level lower than the first drive level to acquire the delay times tp and tg.

In inputting "A, B, C" on a coordinate input plate, when an input operation is started from an initial point, area is determined as an input area, and vibration delay times are measured by using sensors, thereby calculating a coordinate value. When the input operation is continued up to a terminal point, the input point shifts to area. However, vibrations are detected by using the same sensors to calculate a coordinate value as long as the input operation is continuously performed. With this operation, since sensors are not changed for the respective areas, discontinuity of lines at the boundaries between the areas can be prevented.

A coordinates input apparatus for detecting coordinates of an instructed position from a vibration progagation time on a vibration propagation plate is provided. This apparatus comprises; a vibration pen to generate a vibration; a vibration propagation plate with which the vibration pen is come into contact and which transmits the vibration; a sensor which is arranged in contact relation with the vibration propagation plate and detects the vibration; a vibration-proof material attached to the periphery of the vibration propagation plate so as to have a width of 1/2 of a wavelength of the elastic wave of the vibration; and an operation controller to calculate the contact position of the vibration pen on the vibration propagation plate from the detection time when the vibration was detected by the sensor. The sensor detects the surface wave of the vibration-proof material. With this apparatus, the coordinates of the instructed point can be accurately detected using the vibration with being hardly influenced by the reflected waves from the periphery of the plate.

The apparatus detects a light spot flashing on and off in a predetermined cycle and incident at a desired position on a coordinate input screen, and includes a detection device having photoelectric conversion elements corresponding to N pixels for detecting a light spot coordinate. The difference between signals from photoelectric elements in light emission state and in light non-emission state at each N pixel is found, and the smaller of the difference signals of the m-th pixel having the maximum difference signal is set as a threshold value. Effective pixels are identified based on the threshold value, and the coordinate is calculated by using the difference data of the selected effective pixels.

A coordinate input apparatus which can attain an accurate coordinate input operation, includes a sensor for detecting an input variation. The vibration is amplified, and an envelope detection circuit generates the envelope of the amplified vibration. A gate signal generation circuit receives the envelope and a second-order differential signal of the envelope generated by an inflection point detection circuit. The gate signal generation circuit attenuates the envelope and adds a predetermined offset to the attenuated envelope. The gate signal generation circuit compares the sum signal with the second-order differential signal to generate a gate signal. In the duration of the gate signal, a tg comparator detects, as a group delay time, a time up to the zero cross point of the second-order differential signal, and a tp comparator detects, as a phase delay time, a time up to the zero cross point in a predetermined order of a phase signal. An arithmetic control circuit calculates the coordinate position of a vibration input source on the basis of these delay times.
