摘要: An improved drill bit for directional drilling includes a housing or headpiece having means at a rear end thereof for mounting the bit on a trailing component of a drill head, and passages for ejection of drilling fluid into a borehole. A first axle is mounted to extend forwardly from a front end of the housing, and a first roller is rotatably mounted on the first axle. The first roller has cutting projections such as carbide studs thereon and extends outside of the outer diameter of the housing by a distance which defines the size of the borehole when the drill bit is rotated over 360 degrees. A second axle is mounted to extend from the front end of the housing, and a second roller is rotatably mounted on the second axle at a position offset from the first axle. The second roller extends slightly outside of the outer diameter of the housing, but by a distance less than the distance the first roller extends outside of the housing. The second roller is configured to provide a reaction surface for the first roller as the first roller bores the borehole with the cutting projections.

摘要: An improved jaw for a rod gripping device is provided including a front, rod engaging face with a plurality of teeth or studs made of a material harder than the jaw body, such as tungsten carbide, with the studs positioned to engage an outer rounded rod surface. In one embodiment, the studs are oriented radially inward toward a longitudinal axis defined by the rod engaging surface. The rod engaging face of the jaw may have a concave shape in its lengthwise direction, thus being adapted to grasp a cylindrical member such as a rod or pipe section. A tool for gripping a rod including a pair of jaws is also provided.

摘要: An impact boring tool according to the invention suitable for using with a directional boring machine has a tubular housing and a head mounted at a front end of the housing. The head preferably includes a chisel configured for breaking loose rocks and stones encountered in soil. A striker is disposed within the housing for delivering an impact force to the head, either directly or through one or more intervening parts. A trigger mechanism causes the striker to deliver an impact to the head and chisel only when an external force exerted on the impact tool in its lengthwise direction exceeds a predetermined level. This predetermined level generally coincides with a maximum effective amount of pushing or pulling force for moving the tool through the ground exerted by an external device such as a directional boring machine.

摘要: A ground piercing tool has an elongated tubular tool housing and a striker that reciprocates within an internal chamber of the housing. The striker impacts a front impact surface and drives the tool through the ground. An air distributing mechanism causes the striker to reciprocate in response to a supply of compressed fluid. An anvil providing a front impact surface is disposed in a front end opening of the tool housing. The anvil has a rear frustoconical portion that engages a like-shaped forwardly tapering inner wall of the housing and a lengthwise bore that has an enlarged diameter portion. A chisel is slidably disposed in the bore of the anvil and has an outwardly opening annular groove. A spring is confined in compression in a space defined by the annular groove of the chisel and the enlarged diameter portion of the anvil bore. The spring urges the rear end of the chisel to protrude rearwardly from the bore of the anvil a predetermined distance. The spring compresses as the striker delivers an impact to the chisel and moves the chisel forward until the striker contacts a rear end of the anvil.

摘要: A method of replacing an existing underground pipe, especially a sanitary sewer line, uses a boring machine that advances a drill string of hollow rods through the existing pipe. The method includes the steps of mounting a rotary cleaning tool on a distal end of the drill string, moving the cleaning tool progressively through the underground pipe while rotating the drill string in order to clean the inside of the pipe, flushing debris loosened by the cleaning tool from the pipe using a pressure fluid, removing the cleaning tool from the drill string and mounting a camera assembly on the distal end of the drill string, moving the camera and drill string through the underground pipe on the drill string and inspecting the inside surface of the pipe with the camera, removing the camera from the drill string and replacing it with a pipe destroying apparatus, moving the pipe destroying apparatus through the pipe to destroy the existing pipe, and then installing a replacement pipe along the same line as the destroyed existing pipe. This permits a single piece of equipment, such as a directional drill rig, to perform several different functions as part of the pipe replacement process.

摘要: An impactor for use with a directional boring machine for replacement of underground pipes includes a bursting head having a rearwardly opening recess and a front end opening that communicates with the recess. An inlet pipe is connected at its front end to a distal end of the drill string and extends into the recess of the bursting head through the front end opening. A striker is mounted for sliding movement along the inlet pipe, and a distributing mechanism responsive to pressure fluid supplied through the drill string and inlet pipe causes the striker to reciprocate in the rearwardly opening recess of the head to deliver forward impacts against the bursting head. The striker and distributing mechanism are mounted in a tubular housing, and a pulling connection is provided by which the impactor can be pulled by the drill string while the striker is delivering impacts against the head in the same direction as a pulling force exerted by the drill string. The bursting head is preferably slidably mounted on the inlet pipe and moves forward relative to the inlet pipe and drill string in response to an impact of the striker against the bursting head. The impactor can be readily used with existing directional boring machines.

摘要: A method is provided for removing an expander from a ground piercing tool of the type having an elongated tubular tool body with a front nose and a striker disposed for reciprocation within an internal chamber of the body to impart impacts to an impact surface for driving the tool forwardly through the ground. The expander is tightly fitted onto the nose of the tool body. The method of the invention uses a pulling device comprising a pair of arms ending in hooks and mounted at ends opposite the hooks to a yoke having a threaded hole therethrough, and a screw including a threaded stem inserted through and threadedly coupled with the hole. Suitable means are provided for engagement with a device for turning the screw. The method according to a first aspect of the invention includes the steps of positioning the hooks of the pulling device in engagement with a pair of rearwardly facing shoulders on the expander, positioning an end of the screw in contact with the nose of the tool, and tightening the screw against the nose of the tool using the turning device on the engaging means, thereby exerting a pulling force through the arms sufficient to disengage the expander from the nose of the tool.

A plastic tube forms the body of the housing, and the plastic tube is secured to the head. The reciprocation mechanism is preferably an air distributing mechanism that uses compressed air to reciprocate the striker. Such a tool can be used to install an underground pipe by welding a front end of the replacement pipe coaxially to a rear end of the plastic tube, operating the tool over a run to pull the pipe into the ground, and when the tool has reached the end of the run, disconnecting the tool from the replacement pipe.

摘要: The invention provides an apparatus and a method for installing a pipe in a pre-bored hole. According to one aspect of the invention, the apparatus comprises a plug having a rear cylindrical portion with external threads engaged with internal threads of a front portion of a plastic pipe section. A front portion of the plug includes a pulling attachment, and a rear portion of the pipe section extends beyond the rear portion of the plug for attachment to a pipe to be towed through the hole. According to another aspect of the invention, the apparatus comprises a plug having a pulling attachment at a front end, a rear portion with external threads, a lengthwise external cutaway portion on the rear portion, and a slot extending radially through the rear portion. The lengthwise external cutaway portion forms an edge for cutting into an interior surface of a plastic pipe and the slot forms a suitable collection space for collecting pieces of plastic cut from the interior of the pipe by engagement of the threads. The invention also provides an apparatus and method for simultaneously installing several underground pipes in a pre-bored hole. This apparatus comprises a mounting plate having a generally flat plate including a plurality of spaced, crucifix-shaped openings extending through the plate. Several pulling devices can be secured to the mounting plate by sliding a plurality of chains, each chain attached to one pulling device, into one of the openings.

摘要: A portable winch suitable for use in underground pipe bursting and replacement includes a mounting frame positionable at a top opening of a hole such as a receiving pit or manhole. A telescoping mast having a series of nested, top and bottom mast sections is mounted on the frame. A powered winch unit, also mounted on the frame, includes a drive unit and a cable. A guide assembly includes a sheave that guides the cable from the drive unit to the bottom mast section. Suitable means are connected to the frame for mechanically raising and lowering the mast into and out of the hole. As such, the mast according to the invention does not require assembly or disassembly at the beginning and end of each job. The mechanical means for raising and lowering the mast is preferably the powered winch unit.
