    摘要: A magneto-optical data storage system having a magneto-optical disk rotatably mounted on a support body. The disk has a planar storage surface with a plurality of concentrically disposed data tracks. A flying magneto-optical head is mounted on the distal extremity of an arm pivotably mounted on the support body for aerodynamic suspension adjacent the storage surface during rotation of the disk on the support body. A mirror assembly of micron dimensions is carried by the head for reflecting a laser beam between an optical light emitter and receiver carried by the arm and the storage surface of the disk to permit the optical recording and/or reading of information on the data tracks. The mirror assembly has a planar base and a planar mirror spaced apart from the planar base and disposed generally parallel to the planar base. The planar mirror has a longitudinal axis extending between first and second end portions. The mirror assembly further has first and second hinge members secured to the planar base extending along the longitudinal axis and connected to the first and second end portions. The mirror is rockable between first and second positions about the longitudinal axis relative to the planar base and at least a portion of the mirror is of a conductive material. The mirror assembly has first and second spaced-apart electrodes carried by the planar base for driving the mirror between the first and second positions.

The transducer and actuator each include a deflecting member with corrugations producing increased vertical travel which is a linear function of applied force. An accurate and easily controlled method that is insensitive to front-to-back alignment is also disclosed for forming uniform corrugations of precise thickness; independent of the thickness of the deflecting member. The cross-sectional shape of the corrugations is not limited by the etching technique, so that any configuration thereof is enabled.

    摘要: A semiconductor microactuator has a silicon semiconductor substrate having suspension means connected thereto. The suspension means has a first layer of material having a first thermal expansion coefficient and a second layer of material having a second thermal expansion different than the first thermal expansion coefficient and may be a part of a diaphragm or a pair of connecting members. A movable element, which may be a second part of the diaphragm or a boss, is connected to the suspension to be displaced thereby as the temperature of the first and second layers of material is varied. The displacement is solely irrotational with respect to the semiconductor substrate.

    摘要: A trimmable microminiature force-sensitive switching device for detecting the state of external conditions, such as pressure, acceleration and temperature, is disclosed. The device includes a silicon substrate having a reduced-thickness, deflectable member adapted to change its deflection in response to changes in the external condition to be detected. Increasing deflection of the member establishes electrical contact between a common contact and first one, then progressively more, spaced electrical contacts of a plurality of switches. Each of the spaced electrical contacts is connected to a common terminal. Trimming of the switching device is accomplished by application of a preselected external force, such as pressure, that causes the deflection of the deflectable member and the closing of one or more of the switches. Electrical energy is then applied to the external terminal of the common contact and the external terminal of the common terminal of the fusible links, such that current flows through the switches that have closed and through their associated fusible links, causing those fusible links to open circuit, thereby precluding the subsequent detection of external conditions whose level is at or below the preselected level applied during trimming of the device.

The MEMS is torsionally resonant at two frequencies one being about three time the other. The MEMS is excited to resonance by applying an AC signal to the actuators, causing the mirror to oscillate. The AC signal has components at the two frequencies. The magnitude and phase-relationship of the components can be selected such that the mirror oscillates in an approximation of a triangle-wave.

    摘要: In a miniature Q-switched, pulsed laser, having a two arm folded resonator, Q-switching is effected by rapidly and reciprocally tilting a resonator mirror of the laser about an axis perpendicular to the axis of the laser resonator. The angular excursion of the tilting and the frequency of the tilting are selected cooperative with dimensions of the resonator to maximize energy and symmetry of intensity distribution in Q-switched pulses delivered by the laser. Rapid reciprocal tilting of the mirror is accomplished using a piezoelectrically-driven, MEMS scanner operated in a resonant mode.
