    摘要: A method is disclosed of modifying a conventional internal combustion engine to accept ceramic material. A cast iron extension mamber is metallurgically joined to the cast iron engine block, the extension member having a wall defining a bore opening aligned with and larger than the bore opening of the engine block. The extension member has a height substantially equal to or greater than the axial stroke of the piston. The diameter of the upper portion of the wall, defining the bore opening in the engine block, is enlarged to define an annular shoulder; the shoulder has an outer surface substantially axially aligned with the wall defining the bore opening in the extension member. A cylindrical ceramic liner, such as zirconia or alumina, is attached within the wall of the bore opening of the extension member by use of a high strength metallic sleeve which is fitted along the outer surface of the shoulder. The ceramic liner has an internal surface aligned with the wall of the bore opening in the engine block. A metallic cap (comprised of stainless steel or cast iron) is attached to the top of the piston, the cap carrying a ceramic facing. The cap has an effective height commensurate with the effective height of the extension member. The cap defines a trapped air space between the ceramic facing and piston, and the cap has its side wall aligned with the side wall of the piston.

    摘要: A milling cutterhead provided with slots for receiving indexable, disc-shaped cutting bits mounted in individual nest plates. The cutterhead is a generally cylindrical body comprising two concentric body parts, namely, a main member having a circumferential rim portion and an interior ring member which mates with and fits tightly within that rim portion. The nest-receiving slots are cut through the full radial width of the rim portion, and the outer circumference of the interior ring forms the inner walls of the slots. Each nest plate supports more than one-half the circumference of its respective indexable bit at three or more spaced locations so that any inserted bit, no matter how indexed, will have either its radial or axial diameter substantially aligned in a predetermined plane, thereby assuring that the cutting edge of each indexable disc-shaped bit will be positioned to an axial or radial accuracy equal to or less than one-half the diametral tolerance for such disc-shaped bits. With such assured accuracy, no further truing of the individual bits is required when they are indexed. Further, the interior ring design of the cutterhead reduces the probability of stress-related failures and provides increased rigidity needed for high-speeding cutting, and separate tightening wedges permit cutting discs to be readily indexed and/or changed without disturbing the nest plates and without necessitating further truing of such indexed or newly-inserted bits.

The locking means comprise fastening means engaging the tool body and engaging an extended slidable insert bottom seat anvil such that upon actuation the bottom seat anvil is drawn axially, radially and circumferentially relative to the tool body thereby simultaneously drawing the cutting insert retained on the bottom seat anvil into tight engagement with two insert side locating surfaces formed on the tool body and drawing the bottom seat anvil into tight engagement with the tool body.

    摘要: A plurality of cutting members are individually and detachably mounted on a rotatable drum and arranged in spaced and staggered helical rows. The cutting members include a cutting blade having a plurality of curvilinear cutting edges any one of which may be selected to extend beyond the drum periphery in a work engaging position. A seating block indexes the cutting blade in a work engaging position at a preselected cutting angle with respect to the work piece so that as the drum is rotated, the cutting edge makes a linear ''''plane'''' on the work surface and in addition permits blade sharpening by a cutting tool operable in a direction parallel to the drum axis. In so doing, it also serves to automatically index and position each of the cutting edges as each new edge is positioned for use.
