A wire electric discharge machine capable of preventing a straightness error from being caused by consumption of a wire electrode, to eliminate insufficient machining. A correction angle φ is predetermined for preventing the straightness error of the workpiece due to consumption. Correction amounts d1′, d2′ on a program plane and an upper surface of a workpiece, respectively, are determined based on the predetermined correction angle φ, and are added to or substracted from a predetermined offset amount depending on a wire electrode radius and an electric discharging gap, to determine corrected offset amounts d1, d2 on the program plane and the upper surface of the workpiece, respectively. Correction amounts dlo, dup for lower and upper wire guides in an offset direction are obtained based on the corrected offset amounts d1, d2, respectively, so that motion paths of upper and lower wire guides relative to the workpiece are determined.

A vertical calibration method for a wire cut electric discharge machine includes selecting a known altitude for a reference point, marking down four different positions of the upper wire guide of the wire cut electric discharge machine at three different altitudes and reptitively moving the wire of the wire cut electric discharge machine being in contact with the reference point, measuring four different displacements of the upper wire guide when being in contact with the reference point, establishing an equation by using a principle of trianglation, and completing calculation of positions of the upper wire guide and the lower wire guide to finish calibration.

A method of and a device for adjusting perpendicularity of a wire of a wire-cut electric discharge machine for performing a precise electric discharge machining with low cost. The wire is inclined in a U-axis direction to enable the wire to come into contact with only a lower contact piece of an adjusting jig. The wire is held at fixed positions with no play at an upper wire guide and the lower wire guide in this inclined state. The adjusting jig is move in the Y-axis direction to bring the wire into contact with only the lower wire guide and a position Y1 of the contact is stored. The adjusting jig is move in the X-axis direction to enable the wire to come into contact with only the upper contact piece, and the adjusting jig is move in the Y-axis direction to bring the wire into contact with the upper wire guide and a position Y2 of the contact is stored. A displacement of the upper wire guide in the V-axis direction is obtained based on a difference &Dgr;Y between the contact positions Y1 and Y2 and a distance D between the two contact pieces and a difference H between the upper and the lower wire guides, to compensate the displacement of the upper guide according to the displacement amount. The above procedure is repeatedly performed until the difference &Dgr;Y is within an allowable range. An adjustment of perpendicularity of the wire in the U-axis direction is performed in the similar manner.

A method and an apparatus for vertically calibrating a wire of a wire cutting electric discharge machine are provided. The vertical calibration apparatus includes a body, an upper calibration board and a lower calibration board attached to the body and parallel to the machine table, with a ring hole formed on the upper calibration board and on the lower calibration board respectively. The two ring holes have the same vertical axis. The method of wire cutting electric discharge machine vertical calibration comprises searching for the circle centers of the two ring holes by constantly touching the ring edge several times by the wire, then passing the wire through the circle centers. The method of determining the height of the upper holding guide and the lower holding guide for wire comprises utilizing formulae with given radii of the two ring holes, the height of the two ring holes relative to the table, the cone angle of the two ring holes with the same vertical axis, and a variable, which is a measurement from the upper holding guide or the lower holding guide located on the vertical wire passing the circle centers of the upper ring hole and the lower ring hole to a position of the inclined wire which touches the edge of the two ring holes.

An electrode of an EDM drill is aligned in at least two planes by positioning the electrode at a plurality of positions and determining the distances between the rotary center of the EDM drill and a plurality of points on the workpiece surface co-linear with the longitudinal axis of the electrode. By comparing these distances, it can be ascertained whether the electrode is aligned with the workpiece surface in a given plane. If the electrode is not aligned, an angle of rotation needed to align the electrode with the workpiece surface can be determined empirically.

A contact position measurement method including moving either a wire-shaped tool electrode or a workpiece relative to the other within a plane, and causing the wire to approach a reference position on the workpiece; applying a voltage between the wire and the workpiece with the wire oriented perpendicular to the plane; detecting contact between the workpiece reference position and the wire; placing the workpiece reference position generally at the center of vibration of the wire, determined in accordance with the number of occurrences of detected contact; generating coordinate data indicating the position of the wire with respect to the workpiece; and determining the position of contact based on the coordinate data.

A position finding apparatus of an electric discharge machine has a switching device including a relay 3 set into operation when tool electrode position finding starts, so that the switching device turns off machining power applied across a workpiece W and a tool electrode P. At such time, a differentiated waveform, which is obtained by differentiating in a differentiating circuit 15, a square wave produced by a pulse oscillator, is applied across the workpiece W and tool electrode P. Thereafter, position finding is performed with regard to the tool electrode P. A resistor in the differentiating circuit 15 can be made variable in value to alter the differentiated waveform applied across the workpiece W and tool electrode P.

The disclosed method involves generating cartesian coordinate information representative of the electrode deflection from a rest position of a wire electrode electrical discharge cutting machine, feeding this information into an electronic processing system to convert it to appropriate control instructions, and then feeding the instructions into a drive system, which can then correct the relative positions of the wire electrode and the workpiece accordingly, so that the deflection of the wire electrode does not adversely influence the configuration of the cut made in the workpiece by it.The apparatus for performing the method comprises a wire electrode position pickup system, which can be a photoelectric system picking up the shadow of the wire or a system which measures the spacing between the wire and sensing electrodes by sensing the electrolytic current through a dielectric fluid which fills the space between them. The deflection information representative of the deflection is then fed as an input signal into an electronic processing unit which for each coordinate includes an analog computer with a summator, an inverter with amplification of one-half, a differentiator, and a division circuit to convert it to control instructions for a drive unit which makes the positional correction. The correction can be made by the main drive unit which moves the workpiece or by an auxiliary drive which moves the wire guides relative to the wire guide supporting structure.
