    摘要: A hinged carton integrally molded of polystyrene foam and adapted to be locked shut by a flap extending upwardly from the bottom part of the carton inside a side wall of the carton cover and carrying one or more prongs so that the latter will be biased outwardly to snap into a corresponding number of holes provided in said cover side wall, the ruggedness of said carton being materially enhanced over similar cartons of the prior art by the local beefing up of said cover side wall in the immediate areas bordering said holes incidental to the functioning of a novel method of and apparatus for manufacturing said carton. Said apparatus is embodied optionally in a forming tool or in a form-and-trim tool and embraces relatively vertically reciprocable carton shaping matched-molds operating on a heated thermo-plastic web of polystyrene foam to produce one or more entire cartons with each reciprocation. In said method each hole in said cover side wall is formed by two matching wedge shaped cylindrical scissor blades which extend from the male and female matched molds to slide together face-to-face in a plane parallel with the direction the molds approach and separate from each other to comprise a hole-forming plug when said molds arrive at their final carton molding positions of proximity, said scissor blades being then mutually slidingly withdrawn vertically in opposite directions from the cover side wall hole formed thereby as the molds are separated vertically during the second half of a carton forming reciprocation, to release the carton from between the molds. The aforementioned beefing up of said cover side wall is enhanced by recessing the internal carton side wall forming faces of said molds in the areas thereof immediately adjacent to said scissor blades.

    摘要: Apparatus for lining by lamination air-permeable containers with thermoplastic film involving a deep drawing operation. The containers are held in deep drawing molds formed in a rotating table and the film blanks are formed from a film web onto individual holding means secured to another rotating table, the driving means for the tables being synchronized such that the film blanks are timely presented for the deep drawing operation following heating. Each holding means includes a metallic frame having a plurality of closely spaced pins for penetrating a film blank around the area to be deep drawn, the pins causing the area to be relieved of stresses during heating and shrinkage and hence troublesome wrinkles in the blanks prior to being deep drawn. Surprisingly, the pins do not cause tearing of even very thin film, because of the head conductor property of the pins and its effect on the arcing of the film blank in the vicinity of the pins as the blank shrinks.

    摘要: In the production of a trim board such as an automobile roof trim board using a corrugated paperboard substrate which is bulged or dented in a comparatively small area and has an aperture in this area for the installation of a separate article, at least one linear notch is formed in a flat board of corrugated paperboard so as to extend transversal to the ridges of the corrugated medium and be entirely included in the area of the aperture as a preparatory procedure to press-forming of the corrugated paperboard. The presence of the notch allows some deformation of a tensioned liner also in the same direction as the ridges and hence precludes the appearance of cracks in the bulged or dented area. The notched region of the shaped board is thoroughly cut away as the result of the formation of the intended aperture.

    摘要: The method provides matched molds in superimposed relation, cyclically reciprocating vertically each of said molds relative to the other, to first mold a product in a continuous web of heated thermo-plastic material fed cyclically between said molds, halting each cycle just short of its reaching the point of maximum proximity between said molds to allow the material adjacent the periphery of said product to cool prior to performing the trim step, starting the next following cycle with the trim step, the latter being accomplished by continuing the approach of said molds to the point of their maximum proximity, said product being left connected to the web by easily broken tabs and punching the product from the web at a stacking station during a succeeding cycle. The apparatus embodies a double action automatic press including parallel vertical side frames rigidly united with each other and with a tripod supported base. A pair of massive vertical guide posts fixed at upper and lower ends to inner faces of said frames, vertically guide upper and lower tooling mounting platens, each platen being connected by four adjustable links to arms on one of two pair of rocker shafts, one such pair being above the upper platen, the other pair being below the lower platen. Outside one side frame, short arms are fixed on the upper pair of rocker shafts and double armed bell cranks are fixed on the lower pair of rocker shafts, each of the bell cranks having a long arm and a short arm. A pair of long links connect upper and lower outside short arms and a third link connects said long arms. A pitman connects one of said long bell crank arms to a crank arm fixed on one end of a transversely journaled crank shaft at the forward end of the press. A base mounted constant speed motor is connected through a variable speed transmission and an electro-air controlled clutch brake mechanism to a reduction gear box which is interposed in a gap in said crank shaft and directly drives the latter. Each revolution of the drive shaft accomplishes one production cycle of the press. A separate control device determines at what point in the production each cycle ends to provide a cooling "dwell" between cycles so that the trim step takes place at the beginning of each cycle, thereby improving the product. A cyclic web feeder and heater is provided on and driven by the press. The tooling employed in the press leaves the product lightly connected with the scrap of the web following each trimming step by several oppositely disposed transfer tabs which may readily be broken by a punching operation when the product arrives at a stacking station. The press embodies and automatically drives a product punch for accomplishing this function. A product stack conveyor receives products thus punched from the web and automatically discharges product stacks of predetermined quantity. A scrap chopper disposes of the scrap left in the web. The press also includes separate means manually operable while the press is running to vary the time period of the cooling dwell and also to vary the distance, short of reaching the point of maximum proximity between the platens, at which each operating cycle concludes.

As mold parts close, a softened sheet of plastic is stretched over a die surface on one of the mold parts, and a former carried by the other mold part is pressed into contact with the die surface to cut through the plastic along one edge of the latch opening. As the mold parts close further, the former scrapes along the die surface and pushes the plastic across a scraped region away from the cut to form a compressed wall of plastic spaced from the cut to form the latch opening.

    摘要: A machine for forming thin plastic packaging trays of dished configuration with an upper peripheral edge which lies within a single plane. The machine includes a plurality of flat faced vacuum form molds carried on the periphery of a rotating drum. A ribbon of plastic material is continuously delivered to the drum and mechanically clamped to the surface of each mold in consecutive order as the drum rotates. Each section of clamped ribbon is carried past a radiant heater and a vacuum is then applied to draw the softened plastic into the mold. The clamps are disengaged and the trays are held in the molds by a continued application of vacuum while a heated blade moving in a repetitive closed curvilinear path severs the ribbon between adjacent trays and while a pair of rotating knives trim the edges of the trays. A vacuum operated picker removes the trays from the drum and deposits them on a conveyor.

At least one of the die members includes cutting members for separating the formed container from the remainder of the sheet material and also includes at least one elongated projection for compressing and causing local thinning in the connecting portion to form a hinge as the dies move together.

The present application discloses apparatus for feeding a web of heated plastic sheet material to a forming station. Relative movement between the mold cavity and plunger means causes a shallow container lid or the like to be formed and sheared from the sheet stock.
