The safe deletion operations ensure that the data states of a host device making use of the storage device and the storage device itself are synchronized so as to prevent deletion of data from the storage device before it is offloaded to another storage platform.

The present invention relates to a data processing system and method of controlling the system which store job histories of jobs executed on a data processing apparatus. A database stores job attribute data and content data of jobs executed on the data processing apparatus as well as retention dates set for the job attribute data and content data. The database determines the content data to be deletable if data serving as the basis of the content data has been deleted on the data processing apparatus, and deletes the content data upon expiration of its retention date.

In a printing apparatus on a DHCP network, printing data accumulated in the printing apparatus is deleted without troubling a user and shortage of storage capacity is prevented. The printing apparatus is connected through a network to a DHCP server apparatus that stores IP address assignment information including an IP address of each DHCP client. The printing apparatus includes a printing data storage portion that accumulates printing data transmitted from each DHCP client along with the IP address of each DHCP client, and a CPU that determines whether or not each DHCP client is invalid based on IP address lease information stored in the DHCP server and deletes the printing data of the DHCP client which is determined to be invalid from the printing data storage portion.

The data processing apparatus, which is equipped with a memory unit capable of storing data, executes processing of transmitting the data of the memory unit to an external apparatus and erasing the data of the object of transmission to the external apparatus from the memory unit. An acceptance of a specific user request related to processing of the data transmitted to the external apparatus is allowed in a case where the data has been transmitted to the external apparatus. A device, system, method and software product for storing, maintaining, sharing and displaying of digital images in a common designated collection on at least one portable storage and display device. The device has a first memory section designated for storing images and a second memory section for storing digital images of the designated collection. The second memory section has a protected mode that prevents the digital images in the second memory section from being deleted or overwritten. When the protected mode of the second section is disabled, the device will overwrite the digital images of the second memory section with newly captured digital images. These digital images are restored to the second memory section when the digital display and storage device is in communication link with a database that has information for restoring overwritten digital images after newly obtained images in the second memory have been removed from the device.

Storage means comprises a first storage section, a second storage section, and a memory controller serving as data distributing means. The first storage section temporarily stores data outputted (processed for output) from each section (a scanner section, a FAX section, a network processing section, etc.) of data processing means. The second storage section comprises storage regions partitioned in correspondence to the data properties, and stores data satisfying a predetermined condition among the data outputted (processed for output). The memory controller distributes the data to either the first storage section or the second storage section depending on the data property.

In this invention, when a user turns on the power supply of an image sensing apparatus 10, key data necessary to generate authentication data is generated (step S201). When the user turns off the power supply of the image sensing apparatus 10, the key data is erased (step S204). Since a period during which the image sensing apparatus 10 holds the key data can be limited to “a period during which the power supply of the image sensing apparatus 10 is ON”, analysis of the key data can be made difficult.
